Depends on what they are doing to it. I had a 200a alternator rewound and it cost $450 on the bench.

If you shop around you can get it cheaper than the prices you have shown.

What is actually wrong with it that needs t be rebuilt? bearings gone? It may just need new brushes which is a reasonably easy job, and cheaper too......

that said I would get the bearings done when the brushes are replaced, easier to do it once, rather than pull it apart twice.

P.S.

I bought a new 80A alternator (internal regulator) for $250.00 Was mates rates though, via ashdown ingrams two years ago.

best to get it bench tested, if its a denso it wont be cheap, but its worth its weight in gold.

What is it exactly doing, or not doing. I.E. not charging at all or a non regulated charge, you will have to put a voltmeter across the battery posts while it running and gently raise and lower the revs whilst reading the volts to get a better diagnosis.

Might not be bushes but the manual will tell you the minimum lengths for the carbon, could also be volt regulator, some are internal some exo depending on the alternator itself. I think you can tell by the wiring on the alternator itself by memory but not 100% sure how.

The diodes often give up in these alternators but check the brushes.
I bought 13/1/10 a new alternator including vacuum pump from A.E.D for $350.00, 12v, 80amp, int reg 2H/12HT part no 098-13-840. Regards.

Haha.. I get it. Undercharging alternators...

Just had the exact same problems. Replaced voltage regulator and one faulty diode. Also replaced brushes but they weren't required.

Cheers Mate, I bought mine here in Townsville but the alternator was sent up from Melbourne as they did not have one in stock, usually they carry one.
Check yellow pages your area as on my receipt it says they have branches in Clontarf, Archerfield, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Sydney, Newcastle, Launceston, Melbourne,Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, but does not show phone numbers for these.
Australian Electricial Distributors Townsville is [07]47550050
Best regards,
