LS1 or turbo what would you recommend for a GQ??

Now i am sure this might of been covered once before but i cant find it.

Now i have a GQ 4.2 carbi petrol / gas. I had a brand new head put on 2 years ago, custom cam made up, ice ignitition system. Has been dynoed up and they were happy with the power it was putting out.

So 2 years later on i now i want more power and i want an EFI motor of some type. The question i have to ask is should rip it out and put in a LS1/ LS2 running on petrol or gas or should i get the motor changed into efi with a tubo set up on straight gas?

The next question is Cost a LS type motor plus installtion plus all of the little odd and ends would be about 7k from what i can work out

the cost for a turbo motor would be??????? I know you can do it for like $1000 but i want it to be a done propley for the start i have spoken to some people and from what i can gather it would cost roughly 6k

For what it's worth, i would Boost it

You can't beat the Mid-range of a Turbo

L76 is a good option, as it will turn up a bit less $$ than an LS2. The L76 (or L98) are the 'std' 6 litre motors that come in VZ and VE SS's. Standard, they have WAAAAAY more down low and mid range than a std LS1 5.7.

As much as I like turbo's (and wish I had one). From talking to someone who had a turbo TB42. It was expensive to keep running. Where as the V8 LS1 just works for similar powers. And are cheapish if it blows up.

with the turbo it'd be efi or straight gas unless you go gas injection which is expensive.

i'm planning straight gas turbo setup myself with gas research. it won't cost me more than 3k with brand new gas setup. that's just with a standard motor.

ls1 motor will still prolly cost you 2500-3000 plus convertors exhaust wiring fuel pumps etc

went through this 8 months ago with mine. Now i have a straight gas turbo. Only part of the whole kit that is cheap is the ebay turbo, and thats been performing amasingly well! After everything i spent about 3k and its all done myself. Its so much more fun to drive then a v8. On the econ. Side, mines more efficient then td's or equ powered v8's. Did i mention its amasing to drive in the bush?

I thought i could do it for 10k so i budgeted 13k

$6380 crate ls3 6.2l plus delivery
$2800 complete wiring harness from killalux including all sensors & pedal
$1100 for clutch and billet fly wheel
$680 dellow adaptor
$1500-$2200 for custom exhaust and cats
$1875 front accessory kit corvette style to keep the alt up high
$150 starter motor
$1650 pwr offroad race radiator with twin spal 3000cfm thermos
$400 custom mounts
$2000 fuel system inc, custom tank
$2500 tacho,guages, and other accessories

plus tune and engineering which you have for both options anyway.

$19515  some of the stuff you wont need but its soooo easy to way underestimate the cost. And thats without internals which is another 5-7k.

I say BOOST it and have fun.

cheers smitty :D

i meant to write,
ah, so do you have your rig finished yet smitty??
keen to see how it all looks and goes

im biulding a tb42 turbo very slowly went and got a price on custom high mount manifold, dump pipe, full exaust ,cooler piping and a custom plenum/ intake manifold and thats $5k alone plus a turbo 2k for a gt35/40 (xr6 turbo) and a front mount $699 so if you already have an injected engine it pretty much finshes there wouldnt be bad. mines carb so gta set up a full ecu injectors ect.

intercoolers are only 200, you don't need a 35/40 and can run a different turbo like r33 skyline (paid 150 for mine) and straight gas is heaps cheaper than injection.

you can do it cheap and expensive i guess

true true im building mine slow with all the goodies to see how much power i can drag out of it. and no $200 cooler is going anywhere near my 10k plus set up.

im with hockey, my cooler was 180 delivered, makes good power and is fun to drive, ive never looked back!

Sounds like you only want this conversion for the sound of the motor, your best to drive both if posible to see what you like the feel of as they will both drive/behave very different.

What's a cooler gonna affect ur 10k motor? Buy cheap Chinese shit like coolers radiator exhausts and save money for decent turbos and engie parts

by not being as efficent as a good one. my cooler is being custom made to suit and radiator is a PWR alloy radiator and im still spending 2k on the turbo its all up to what you wna do i gess, mine has all the goodies, rods are custom made by crower as are dish pistons by cp pistons, crower stage 2 forced induction cam, ACL race series bearing set, crower valve springs, 3 angle valve grind as you can see no expense has been spared here so yea will see the numbers when i get it runnin one day but this biuld is already up to a year long nd ive only got the motor together so far.

Big lux, it sounds like you building a Drag car, not a 4WD

Don't be so keen on denouncing the cheaper "coollers", there is a wright up in PI, this month that has done back to back testing, with a known high end Jap brand, and one from HDi

The HDi one came out ontop  , mind you that's there RS spec Intercooler, but they are a LOT cheaper than any of the "Brand named" ones kicking around

in the size cooler that i got, efficiency difference between my ebay one (made in qld btw) and a say pwr or equvelant would be 1psi at best, and the bar and plate design of it is fantastic, cools efficiently thats all i want

Ok settle down, look im in no way trying to denounce cheap coolers, i was just giving him an idea of the quote i got for my set up and im happy to pay that price. I do understand you can get decent ones for lesser price and using a cast manifold stock intake diff turbo u could do it for alot cheaper then i am. thats my 2c.
