how do u make a 3f petrol cheaper to run
hey i got a troopy with a healthy rebuilt 3f in it the best i can get from a full tank (85 litres) is 250 kms it hurts the hip pocket a little and been an apprentice only makes life harder
Sell it buy a diesel thats what I did. 250km to those 85L is heavy though, mine in a healthy state of tune with snorkel, extractors, HEI ignition on 33''s returned 23-25L/100km. I sold it and bought pretty much the same car in turbo diesel, goes better, 11.5L/100km and total fuel cost is within cooee of the 3F. Its a big heavy 4x4, it will never be cheap to run.

ive heard that bout 15 times over ive actually got a 60 series sahara in me back yard with a 12ht turbo six diesal and an auto rammed up its arse im nearly at the point of throwin motor box diffs (only cause its all 4 discs with front and rear landcruiser air lockers from arb straight into the troopy pretty out there conversion but i figured if dad and i could convert all the running gear out of a defender into a dirty ole series three and get it registered wats stopping me besides its to only car i got to drive and im an apprentice on 300 a week
I say work harder or longer or smarter so the price of fuel doesn't hurt so much.

What is the 3F in? a 75 series troopy with a 5 speed? what year? carby model?
If you at sitting on 110kph towing a 25ft boat no wonder your fuel economy is average....
I would suggest a good tune and service, pull the dissy out and get it graphed, make sure brakes are not dragging, tyre pressures are correct, all the little things.
I had a 2F 82 troopy with 4 speed and used to get around 450 - 500klms out of a tank on highway driving, city used more. The killer is high revs and speed, anything over 80kph and fuel economy really suffers.

Have a search on some of the US sites for carb replacement, they use a twin throat weber similar to a 32/36 to get better fuel economy. I know a few people that have put holleys on 2F's and taken them off as they ended up using too much fuel.
250 klms for a 85 litre tank is crazy. thats around 3 klms a litre!!

As Scuba has suggested, get rid of the 350 holley and stick a 34ADM weber off a XE/XF ford on it.
If you are going to LP gas it, make sure you fit a solid type float into the carby (be it the weber or holley) as a backfire, which can happen on LPG will crush the float and it will flood when running petrol.

you should get a job in a comedy club. A 3F haul asstroopyluke wrote:the old 3fs haull ass
My old 3F middy used to cost around $12-14 per 100km to run on gas rolling on 35's.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Haha no prob lukey not sure they would fit mine anyway. I don't know if putting the motor out the 60 is such a good idea. It's done a lot of k's and probably will need a rebuild. Can't believe it is so bad on fuel! Bet my rover doesn't look so bad now after all hope you are able to get it running better mate. Would be a shame to have to sell it.
