having thoughts of upgrading the engine in my gq,its currently running a stock 350 chev thats done about 350,000kms,its getting a bit tired!! my thoughts were either a injected 5.7 or 6ltr is there any big advantage(other than more cubes)in the 6 litre compared to the 5.7???

more power, more torque, use less oil everything else is pretty much the same, but a fair amount of the guys with the 5.7 in their commodores are upgrading to the 6L

L76 and L98 variations of the 6L motor, as found in VZ and VE commodores in std form have WAY more power down low. If you;re used to an old school, cast iron small block, you'd be disappointed in the (lack of) low down grunt that the new school LS1's (5.7) have. The 6L (in std form) is a much better proposition for a swap.

My brother was showing me an article in a recent street commodore's mag about a mob making aftermarket 6L blocks that are supposed to be the shiznit. $2k for a bare block from memory, just add your own internals. Can't remember the brand though - let me know if you want more info and i'll make a phone call.

You'd have to change the adapters wouldn't you as the old 350 chevs have different bellhousings to the LS series of motors? Could just stroke yours and put a bit of a cam in it
Would avoid having to be re-engineered etc and redoing your fuel system and wiring that way.

If it was me I would be getting the 350 rebuilt for a blower keeping
the engine still around standard size for good cooling.
or rebuild it with about 383 cubes and a lazy safe 300hp

yeah belhousings are slightly different, just done some more reserch on the marks adapters site, and it looks like to buy most of the things to make the conversion easy id be spending upwards of $6k!!! i think ill either look at rebuilding mine or buy a new vortec crate motor?
do you think an engine running alloy heads would get rid of heat quicker than the same engine running cast iron heads?? therefore run cooler??

I know that under sustained/repeated load runs, the alloy blocks get heatsoak pretty bad, although i can't see why you'd have any heat issues with alloy heads. Isn't alloy a better thermal conductor than cast iron?

Engine conversions always blow out in cost. If you are happy with the power just get a rebuild for longevity and reliability.
