Assistance required for Terrano Auto

A mate of mine purchased a 1990 or 91 Import Terrano turbo diesel last week and noticed on the 300 kms drive home that when he was cruising at highway speeds the moment he touched the accelerator pedal the auto would kick back to 2nd and scream the little diesel's head off.
Normally I would suspect the auto but it's apparently been replaced by the previous owner who claims he's never had a problem with it.
I know that in an old model car with a cable or linkage to the auto, if that was too tight they would kick down too easily but I think this car is electronic .. not sure as I haven't had a look yet (later today).
So before I go looking deeper, and as a stab in the dark maybe, is there anyone here that might have any ideas???
