I don't think there's a lot of difference except the year of manufacture - and some cosmetics.
Have a look at the link -

little difference at least between the late model 40s and the 42s. The ealier 40s had a different floor under the seats to accomodate the fuel tanks.
Also i think the trans tunnel might be a bit different to accomodate the 5speed and shifter locations on the late 42 as opposed to the 40.

bj40 has 3.0 litre B motor, drum brakes, 42 has 3b 3.4 litre, disk brake front, there are frame differences (42 is substantially stiffer), 42's had (possibly optional 5 speed), optional LX spec with cloth seats, optional air cond, triple wipers, different springs, other minor cosmetic differences.
I don't know that there is any such thing as a FJ42. I don't think there is but I could be wrong.

basically it is the last 4 years:
BJ/FJ40 up until 1980
BJ42, 1980-1984
FJ/HJ 60 also came as HJ/FJ62 series'

the BJ are all Diesel, whilst the FJ are petrol. BJ 40 has the 1B, and the 42 has the 3b

There was an FJ42. It was a 2 wheel drive model. Seriously.
