can you, or would you put a blow off valve ("show off valve") on a 2.8D lux with an aftermarket turbo?

To get the valve to open you need to run a line from your vacume pump to the top of the valve, this will create a vacume and suck the valve open. Old school mitsubishi 4D56T engines run them and mitsubishi have rolled a similar design over to the 4M40.
I think a VL turbo style one would be the best, althou not really what you are after.

yeah thats what i want to get... not specifically a "ppssst" but more of a flutter. i have a snorkel so i wont be getting a pod in a big hurry.
i saw a landcruiser on the beach which must have had one of those flutter type ones, and i thought it was cool.
and as for everyone else, you all can get stuffed, if i want to get a BOV or whatever, i'll do it. you can pay me out, but my truck will shit on all y'all's trucks, ya hear?

I had a pod on my surf as it came like that from japan, and since i avoid water like the plague, i never bothered changing it. Even though it was auto it made an awesome 'flutter' when i snapped off the throttle, and would have been much better if i replaced the rubber inlet piping with stainless etc as it creates an echo effect. I believe the noise comes from the throttle shutting off but air still being pushed against the fins of the impellor.... something like that, i'm sure nick or someone will explain it better.

Blow off valves were originally designed to prevent the turbine stalling as a result of pressure waves bouncing backwards up the inlet tract when the throttle plate is snapped shut. My (limited) understanding of diesels is that they don't have throttle butterfly (Nick indicates I may be wrong - so what's new ) so would normally do SFA.
If it's not gonna help performance, and you only want it for the noise, the ricer brigade make "noise generators" to give the "BOV noise" whether you have a turbo or not. I think the concept is about as silly as lowering a 4WD.

If you want your turbo diesel to sound sweet when changing gears and the like.
I would start by getting a full 2 3/4" or 3" mandrel bent exhaust put on it with no mufflers(the turbo will quieten the engine alot)Then once that is fitted start playing around a little with the boost pressure,keeping in mind as you increase the boost you need increase the fuel through the pump.
I have done this on my 80 series with a standard turbo,i'm running 12psi of boost and it has made a real nice change to performance and it sounds great.I get a real nice turbo whistle while boosting and it sounds similar to a BOV when gear changing.

a flutter is not a good sound to have coming from a turbo. diesel engines may be different but the flutter noise is the air that is not being used by the engine forcing its way back out of the turbo. this will decrease the life of your shaft and compressor turbine. a bov is designed to stop this happening by letting this compressed air bypass the turbo and vent to atmo. as i said diesels may be different.
thats the way. thanks for the serious answers peoples. i'm over the whole concept of a BOV on my truck, i thought it would have made it better, whilst adding a bit of style, but buggeer it... its definatly not worth the hassle. i dont know much about turbo's and the likes, so this was a handy insight.

Thes are not really bloww off valves. They are over boost valves to protect the engine if something goes wrong and there is too much boost. BOV's reduce turbo lag and only really work on high performance petrol engines. All the wankers with their zip zip cars using them on the street are playing with themselves as it will reduce performance in a slower revving standard turbo engine.

true, but i wasnt really in the mood to fully explain it so though i would keep it breif. I think the biggest problem with the valve is most are set to about 8pount and you can boost them to a maxium of about 10 till the valve will "bleed" constantly effectively giving you no more than you had. not good if you want to run big boost, like 12+.
