My very slow project.... Some stuff to share.

A project that started back in 2008.

Just got it out to do a shake down to find faults...

Car still have little / minor stuff to tidy up like electrics and drive line vibrations.....

But figuring out the driveline issues might need some ORS advise soon.

Some pics i took yesterday for the heck of it...

Slow poke engine. Air filter is temporary for now.

Hopeless articulation when ramping up front... Still much better after swapping the rear leaf springs... Previously there was no down travel what so ever... Any suggestion guys?

Surprisingly when ramping from the rear 1st the articulation is pretty good. In fact it's still haven't been maxed out... Scared mah as i'm all alone and don't wanna topple over the poor Saga lol....

Wish list...
Side step, rear tyre carrier, Warn M8274, lower TC low ratio or final drive (ideally a 4.8:1 or 5.2:1).....

The saga continues.

check this out, some side steps for you. only problem is that they are silver not black.

Which Toyota diffs are you using now, did they fit straight up or did you have to make any modification on the suspension etc? Very cool ride by the way a combination of a Rocky strong body and Toyota diffs with ratio and locker combination's.

Tasmania is a pretty long way for me to ship it to Malaysia lol...
But thanks anyway.

I'm running Hilux axles.

Pretty straight forward. Just needed to redo the rear spring perches.
Using Ultimate Suspension Hilux springs up front and Ultimate suspension Rocky springs rear.
Home brew high steer.

It's ok, but could be always better.
I wonder those who have done spring overs did they encounter any driveline issues?

Oddly my driveline vibration is when i taking off at standstill.
But surprisingly when cruising at high speed it's fine...

Am i missing something or could it be more of a diff issue. Like a worn ring and pinion or a worn lock right?
Oh well.

the other thing that can do that is tyres. often you will feel the lugs at low speeds or when taking off slowly but will feel smoother when at high speeds. could be the cause. if you can borrow a set of highway terrains of a mate to check could be an option (if you know anyone with 6 stud rims with highway or all terrains)

also just wanted to say nice work on your build. its always nice getting to near the end of a project, at least to the point of driving.

I was running hilux diffs and had no vibration problems at all. The only thing i can think of is did you make sure the diff pinion flange and the transfer case flange are parallel? Im not sure if this would cause low speed problem tho?

I was strugling with flex as well but it was mainly to do with shock lengths.

Your car looks good and it makes me want to do some more on my rocky project.

Ok will have a look at the driveshafts/ propeller shaft if that is what you meant by flange.

Btw what TC are you using? Rocky or Hilux?

May i ask if you could share some pics of your ride?
Love to see how yours looks like.

Being sprung over your driveline vibration from stand still up to speed very well could be your axles wrapping up the springs you may need a torque rod.
Talking from experience doing spring overs on toyotas (60,40) you need to fit a torque rod as they wrap the springs up, good change its the same on your rig.

sweet looking rig but I had one ever simalar many years ago....

Thanks for the compliments.

The vibrations eliminated when i swaped to a double CV joint.

I like the idea of a traction bar but it feels like the rear springs is super stiff.

I might be wrong but it seems like the car can live without one for now.

Plus the 3L diesel is utterly gutless.

I wonder what i can do to get more poke out of it.
What should i check?
Injection Timing
Cam timing
Turn up the Aneroid fuel thingy?
Tighten up the turbo actuator rod to get more boost?
Sometimes i wonder if i should swap turbo to a T28 off an SR20DET?
How about fitting a 5L fuel pump?

Also I was wondering if it's a great idea to swap to rear Toyota Hilux IFS springs for better travel and comfort.

I wonder which leaves do i pull out too?
(To my understanding once i go down this route i need a traction rod).
Correct me if i'm wrong.

"Anti Wrap"/"track" etc etc bars for leaf springs systems are quite challenging to do correctly. Getting the geometry wrong can easily cause suspension bind limiting travel and creating significant forces on the suspension components.

Have a search in the Suzuki section for LOTS of info on track bar issues ( and lots of pics of damaged diffs etc etc ). However you will also find some good ideas there as well - particularly the slip and twist style yokes.

Sometimes ( mild cases ) moving the shock lower mounting point further out from the axle also helps as the shock then can resist the twist more effectively.

I never had issues with stock Feroza gear ratios but when i fitted reduction gears and went auto axle wrap was a issue. The more torque you have the more dramatic the problem.

New updates:
Some new pics now with sidesteps, rear tyre carrier/ bumper, and 12000lb winch.
Gone in is a dual battery system and i removed a leaf spring for the rear.
Car is still tall but now but the down travel have improved tremendously at the rear.
Now i need a spare rim.
Need more power.....

Fit a good roll cage if your going to drive across any sloping terain. :-)

IMHO its needlessly high, spring fittment is not ideal and not bumpstopped correctly
Is that a panhard dropping to the pictures RHS ? if so get rid of it ( might be something else but ..........)

Apart form the fact that the lux axles are SPOA what are you trying to achieve with this much lift ?
A couple of inches travel till it sits on the bump stops is about all that's required for an offroader, lots of droop however is cool

However if you fix the suspension at that height i'd consider fitting antiroll bars ( and disconects of course ) to make it more stable
on the road, soft and tall = scarry.

Points noted and thanks form pointing it out.

An internal 6 point roll cage, semi bucket seats, racing harness, cut off switch been fitted since day one.
Yes i'm aware it's tall and took the wrong path from the beginning of the project by going SPOA.
Went for SPOA not because of the lift but because of the leafspring and the mounts keeps dragging on the trails with the original SPUA setup.

In short i've come to realise the only way to make it low now is to run SPUA again.

So to date i've removed a leaf spring from a pack and might consider running shorter shackles.
The pics posted up is b4 removing the leaf spring.
I haven't wheeled it hard with the current setup so i don't know how tippy it is.

As for road handling the suspension is acceptable with not much body roll if any. A bit on the stiff side for road use. To make the road handling abit more livable, more castor would be nice. Just my 2 cents.
