79 model never had a 5spd, if it is a LN46 (diesel)they originally had a 4spd that can be rebuilt with the appropriatte parts to become a 5spd ,an are quite easy to make a dust cover for, just need 1mm plate an a jigsaw, But dont waste your time these boxs are to weak(4 blown up boxs sitting in the corner of my shed )
Th RN46 (Petrol) box can only be a 4spd, there is physically no where to put a 5th gear
If you've got a latter model box an dellow conversion ,dellow should be able to supply you with the cover

Hi redv8lux, I have an LN46 with the 4 speed, Do you have any info on how to rebuild these gearboxes with a 5th cog? I'm still running the 2.2l diesel NA, so i'm not too concerned about breaking it.
Cheers.

Its been awhile ,but from memory i had to change the selecter shafts an their lockouts on the 4th gear selectors ,fit selector fork for 5th ,
You have to remove the oil splash ring off the back of the main shaft an fit 5th gear assembly in its place ,an also fit the other 5th gear parts on the back section of the counter shaft ,
The kit to do the conversion can be bought from Automotive Transmission Components in Wagga.$450
You get everything but the bearing that goes on the back of the counter shaft in the extension housing $35 (Bearing O/haul kit is approx another $350)
Or i may still have the converted box (I'll have to have a look for it ) which you can have for $100 plus freight

yeha ok then, could you have a look for me. How strong are these boxes once they have been converted? Also where abouts are you located and how heavy you think the box would be if you still have it?
Thanks

yep no worries ,I'm in bairnsdale East Gippsland Vic
The boxs are around 30 kilos,
Their not to bad as long as you dont put a torquey 308 in front of them
Should'nt be a problem with a standard 253
