Towing my boat home today and coming down a steep hill I thought I had lost my brakes until I realised there was no power assistance. Managed to get home very cautiously.
The vacuum pump on the alternator is not producing any vacuum.
Can they be overhauled? Does anyone know know where I could get another one at a reasonable price? I hope I dont have to replace the alternator.........

Are you sure it is the pump,it is common for the small vaccum hoses ,especally around the rear of the pump,to perish and fail, causing
vaccum loss.
I have stripped the pumps, they are very simple amd just require cleanliness, and cleaned up the vanes to enable free movement, improving their pumping ability. They seem to clog up with old oil?.

J Top,
I pulled the large vacuum hose off the pump while the engine was running and couldnt feel any vacuum. So I assume its something to do with the pump. Are there other hoses which connect to the pump?

You can rebuild them... but may as well take the opportunity to upgrade while at it.
search few pages back, has been mention of places to buy upgraded ones
