'Tink' sound coming from an LC80

Post by djroberts »

hi there, looking for ideas as to what the tink sound is that's coming from the front of my 80? hubs unlocked, seems to do it more in reverse (generally when coming out of a driveway), steering wheel turned slightly. some times when it is loud you can feel it in your feet.

some people have suggested panhard bushes? i checked on the hoist and they look a bit cracked but no metal on metal? body mounts are ok. s/housings and wheel bearings are tight. steering conections look tight. chassis around steering box not cracked???

this is doing my head in - been doing it for 6 months and has not made any difference the vehicles performance.

if i could assimilate it to anything it sounds like a badly worn cv - but only goes 'tink' not 'tink tink tink tink'??????

cheers, Dave.

maybe check the radius arm bolts are all tight.
Mine makes a clunk/tink in similar situation, in mine I reckon it is due to worn/elongated holes in the radius arm brackets on the diff.

rear tailshaft moving on the bolts slightly... mine does this, usually when i go backwards, and its the tailshaft slipping just a tad on the bolts on the rear diff... i must tighten them..........

sounds like its coming from the front

I had a similar sound that was the front swaybar bushes (early model with the pin type mounting). It could also be loose shocks or the rear sway bar

hey y'all, finally managed to find the problem  turned out to be two loose gearbox cross member bolts!

obviously the slight twisting of the chassis was causing the thing to creak!?!?

last time i remember putting a spanner on those things was 3 years ago when i did the clutch.

end of topic
