My mate is looking to build new engine, turbo etc in his GQ 4.2 diesel. Need some opinions on who to use for the build and what sort of turbo/injector pump etc to use.

if your lucky, turbos may have been discussed 10 times a day for the last 5 years previously, but Im not quite sure.
maybe

I'm pretty sure a search would have covered this a million times over but whatever.
GT2860RS turbo with .64 exh housing. You'll need an oil and water line kit with an oil restrictor, a T3 to T25 flange adaptor as most of these turbos come with T25 flanges but patrols are T3 and wastegate actuator to suit the boost levels you're after.
Pump, I'd suggest trying to get a standard GU pump as they have the factory boost compensator fitted. A good tuner will be able to get great results out of that combination. 150hp+
If you need help with the turbo, PM me

Is that what they call an aneroid??
Do all TD42 GU pumps have the aneroid/boost controller AND 11mm plunger or is it from a certain year/model onwards???

All factory turbo GU's have an aneroid and are an 11mm pump. Try and get the non-intercooled pump so you dont have to muck around with TCV wiring.

^^^^ what he said.
most people understand 'boost compensator' better than anearoid but it's the same thing yes.
If you can dodge the extra wiring from the later model pump it'll be a lot easier so that should be anywhere up to 2004? As long as it's not factory intercooled whatever year that started anyway.
What this means is that you can have a normal 'base' fuel rate and as you build boost it adds the respective ammount of fuel so that you can achieve a good air fuel ratio across the whole rev range.
without a boost compensator, it is always a compromise with your tune. Good fuel at low rpm and there isn't enough at higher rpm to make power, enough fuel for higher revs and good power means too much fuel down low, poor fuel economy and sometimes a bit smokey.
When you go to talk to a tuner, make sure they specialise in diesels and ask them do they adjust the boost compensator and fuel, if they give you a blank look, make sure they realise it's a GU pump and if they still don't get it, find another tuner. Someone who knows what they are doing can really make a truck hammer with that setup. I'm not from Vic so I don't know any good tuners. If he feels like coming to QLD I can sort him out with a good local guy.

Beware of some of the real early Gu pumps, they had a 10mm plunger or head and rotor.

Yep
The id number will start with VE6/10 if its a 10mm pump and VE6/11 if its 11mm.

How can you tell by looking at it if it has a boost compensator fitted?
