i just took some michilen at's off my NJ there 31 10.5 15's on factory alloy,

i found them to be quite good, really quiet, fairly hard wearing, i just have a feeling they would be expensive,

I guess it all depends on what you are using the tyres for? I have had 2 sets of Cooper ST's (they are currently priced between $260 and $280 for 31") and they are great tyres. I had 1 set of Cooper STT's (which are currently $300+ per tyre). They seemed great for the first 10,000 to 20,000km but then became really noisy and rough to drive on the road. I replaced them at about 50,000km. After the Coopers, I kind of went 'softer' with my tyres and got 31" Yokohama Geolander AT-S, which set me back $189 each, fitted and balanced. Currently, they have done 70,000+km and I am looking to replace them with something a bit more aggressive now. When I first got my tyres, they got me all through the outback, up Big Red, Skytrek, and heaps of other places without issue. They're really quiet and smooth on road and they are ok offroad. In December 2009, I went 4WDing after a week of rain in the Glasshouse Mountains, and these tyres had virtually no traction whatsoever!

Harcore stuff- forget it, outback touring, occasional offroad driving, and mostly driven on road, those Yoko AT-S may be suitable for you.
