Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi Guys
I'm sure this may have been covered before but here goes. I have a 1981 BJ45 flatdeck cruiser with a very very tired 3b and 4 speed box in it. I also have a 1986 BJ74 with a 13bt and 5 speed box in it. My question is weather the 13bt/5 speed/transfer case setup will bolt into my old bj45 without to many hassels. So i guess im just asking for peoples opions that may have done this swap and if people think there are going to be any potential problems. The 13bt is 24V and the 3B is only 12V so i know i am goin to have to change Alt/Starters fuel cut off solenoids etc but i was thinking more alongs the lines if weather mounts etc will line up. Any info on this swap would be much appreciated

Yes, the 13bt will bolt into your 45 series since it has the 3b, h55 gearbox will also go in, just need to cut out a clearance hole in the floorplate where the shifter pokes through as the 70 series gearshift is located a bit further back than the 45. You'll have to get both driveshafts worked on as well, as they'll need to have their lengths changed. You'll also have to wire up the fuel cut off etc as the 13bt doesn't use an edic motor. Hope that helps.

Oh, I'm not 100% on this, but the bellhousing on the BJ74 gearbox might be different to your BJ 45, it'll still bolt up fine, but the gearbox might be canted at an angle, I know that the 2H bellhousing differs between a HJ 47 and HJ 75 in this way.

so a 5spd from a 2h 75 series wont go straight in to a 47??

Dunno if it helps but I have a BJ42 5spd and bell housing behind a 13BT in a BJ74, looked the same as the one we took out.

It will bolt in, but the 75 series bellhousing cants the gearbox/transfer on an angle, thereby more of the transfer case hangs below your vehicle, ready to hit something. The solution is to remove the bellhousing from your H41 gearbox that's stock in your 40/45/47, then install it onto the H55 that you want to put in. Problem solved.

Thanks for all the info and advice guys. If anyone can come up wth anymore things i may have to overcome that would be mint. It looks like i might attack this project next week so i will let you all know how i get a long

i just thought of a few more questions i would like to ask you guys. Will the axles that are in the BJ74 fit the BJ45 if so will i be able to run the disc brakes in the front also will i be able to run the power steering from the BJ74 in the 45 and lastly how would the 45 go running 10.5 rubber or is this going to rub steering arms etc when turning.

Check the bible section of the Toyota forum here, you can convert to power steering using a 60 series box, 75 series steering arms and knuckles, not sure about axle housings though, but another option is to remove the swivel hub housings from the BJ 74 and swap them onto the 45 series front axle housings.

Just thought i would give you all a bit of an update on my project. The 13bt and box is in it was'nt as straight forward as i thought it was going to be but thats life i guess. I had to make new mounts for the bigger radiaitor so that took a bit of time. Also i had to add brakets on the rear diff to accomadate the new park brake system as i got rid of that aweful one on the rear of the old 4 speed. The other major hiccup i came across was with the new box the 40 series must have a narrower chassis as the vaccum unit on the side would not fit between the chassis rails so i machined all the top of it and mounted a little electronic motor to move the plunger forward and back so it no longer works on vaccum. There have been lots of other litle things to test me along the way but that is the joys of a new project. I still have a few other things to tidy up like altering the driveshafts and also getting a new handbrake cable made up as the bj45 is a LWB if anybody want to see some photos or anything let me know as i took a couple along the way.

Definitely post all pix.... also you say the fit wasn't as straight forward as you thought. Tell us where you had trouble and take/post more pix as required. The people that answered your initial inquiry had some experience and tried to help you out, so how about you add to the information pool with your project. Definitely give all info possible on your "electric" 4wd engage. Good work on your conversion...
