i want something with maps of the area eg high country, so i can scroll along and see where it comes out etc, what is a good brand and model to get cheers

From my personal experience, forget Magellan.
Try the garmin 400t, fantastic unit, touch screen, scroll across the whole country if you want in 1:25000.

Or perhaps you could try the larger but more expensive unit, the HEMA Navigator.

Id go the Garmin, you would be completely set up with a great unit and topo's of the whole country for about $800-$1000

I have the Magellan Explorist XL with a big color screen, and got it as a traveller pack with the topo maps already loaded covering the entire country in great detail. It works fantastically well and enables me to do exactly what you're looking for and a lot more.

$1200+ in shops, $900 on fleabay.

Another vote for anything but Magellan here

I just use motion X GPS app for my iPhone and it worked great on the weekend up in the high country. Cost me $5 plus the on going phone costs

A recent mag review claimed a battery life of under a couple of hours, in fact only a little over one hour from memory, for the Hema, so not sure I'd go that route, but it does apparently have OziExplorer so that would a plus because when Ozi is setup well, it's quite a good option. But for road nav it uses "Route 66" which I've never been too impressed with.

Personally I use the Garmin Oregon 300, and with the new topo map set available, am pretty sure that it will only get even better (I'm still using the older non topo map set). It's been brilliant so far. Just a little small screened for my aging eyesight. Looking forward to buying the topo maps for my birthday present to myself.

i use mine every day onroad and most weekends off road

im in QLD so i dont no alot about vic but im told they cover offroad stuff very well. hema do offer some great expansion packs if you want better
