The only way to get a B motor to sound good is probably to replace it with a v8. It's an old 4 cyl diesel. What were you expecting?

so your saying if i change the exhaust system on the old girl to a striaght through or somthing it wont change the noise out the rear at all?

i dont expect the engine to sound like a v8 just not like a tractor out the rear end

It might change the noise out the back if you change it all. Probably sound like a louder tractor :?:

Thats the reason i love my little B diesel, cause it sounds like a tractor....and my exhaust is stock-standard.
I reckon if you put a larger exhaust on or just got rid of the mufflers it would sound offensive. :P
This engine isn't about horsepower and sounding tough, it's about old-school reliability. Wouldn't you rather listen to the diesel rattle away, than whats coming out the exhaust? :?

they dont need to be loud or tough sounding, its enough that they crest the hill fully stock where fully modified loud trucks fail. Thats where the little B series gains its respect.

cheers

if you want to know what your engine sounds like with a diff muffler take your current one off...

i have had a 2.5" system with muffler that was good. i now have a 2.5 straight thru no muffler or resonator and its fckn loud once you get on the gas even with a turbo (ppl reckon a turbo quietens down the exhaust ).. im getting a muffler fitted once i get some extra cash

just drive yours to learn about your 40. leave the mods until you understand your 40 better then you will make better decisions

4x4joel,
don't mess with the engine... as they said before they are a tough reliable little putt putt... thats their charm.. they 'take a lickin and keep on kickin".
look at the rest of the vehicle first then very last thing take a look at the engine.. you will have enough to keep you busy with that... upgrades and add on's... should keep you happy and alot of the time power isn't everything but a capable driver and traction package will beat power (almost) every time. and big noise only attracts attention and most of the time only highlites other ... unroadworthy bits and you don't want every .. umm police officer checking you each time you go out.
