tech question about shocks, can some one please help

hi all :cool:

i am looking at buying some shocks for my 40 mine mesure to 512mm not flexed at the moment they are 30 years old and are ratsh*t.

i am looking to replace them with.....tough dog shocks adjustables 2 sets) adjust fine, straight. good 415mm - 660mm eye to eye

could some one clarify if this will work for me ? or if not what will i need to do?

my shackles are aftermarket, 170mm witch might have put to much stress on the origonal 40 shocks? witch is making my rig super bumpy,

please help :cry:

How much lift do you have, how do you want your suspension to work, 50% uptravel 50% down travel, 75% - 25% etc etc etc. at ride height how far will the suspension travel upwards either until it hits the guard or it will not compress anymore, how far will the suspension travel down etc.

You need to take all those questions into account, and get out there with the tape measure and flex it on something without shocks so you can work it out.

i took the rig out for a spin i couldnt get it to flex to the bumps the other wheel kept trying to lift of the ground,could this be because my shackles are 170mm with stock shocks?

any way i measured it to be 370 eye to eye and the guys i was going to buy are 415mm eye to eye so i guess that they wont work for me.

Hey 4x4 joel.....

This question has been asked many times before... as " berad" said get out the tape... if you are still confused..... obtain as much info not only from here but also from a suspension specialist... and there are many plus a load of literature on the subject what it boils down to, I have found is this... the use... are you after flex or load carrying capacity.... because it will determine what you'll realy need... work that out and then you will be on your way. then it is a matter of selection... diferent shocks will work better for diferent uses ie ..long travel.. large bore.. gas filled.. foam filled.. adjustable... non adjustable, the list goes on.. :oops:

just remember mellows40 shocks have nothing to do with "load carrying capacity"

not *entirely* true. a small bore shock with poor heat dispertion will fade/die/become useless on corrugations long before a better, big bore, good heat dispertion shock. so if your looking at carrying big loads any sort of distance on bad roads, yes, shock choice will be different to if it's a light duty/light weight weekend wheeling toy.
