use search, what bad things have you heard about the 2.8, they can be a bit sluggish but are generally a very reliable motor

Hey mate, get a dual cab lux, they are big enough to take friends or the kids out with you.
The diesel engines arent the most powerful things around, but are really torquey, they go really good off road, the diesels have all their power down low, so when you are doing some climbs up rock ledges for example, you can just about idle up.
Ive always had petrol engines, and my lux is my first diesel, its great off road, but on road its not the fastest thing Ive ever driven, but it doesnt bother me at all.
Im more than happy with it.
If you get a turbo diesel, then its pretty easy to get more power out of it.

And if you really want coils all round and your set on a lux, Lukeys 4x4 customs in Sydney does a coil conversion kit for most luxes.
Otherwise, an 80series Cruiser or GQ/GU Pootrol would be the go.

Surfs are good if they suit the driving you want to do and you prefer a mid wheel base..

Coils all round, expect to pay 12 to 15k to acheive this if you don't do it yourself.

The 4 runner 2.8 is a very good motor, no sprinter by any means but nice and torquey offroad, fuel efficient and reliable.

If you want to do harder tracks and don't want to spend heaps on conversions then as mentioned look for a cheap 80 or even a GQ.
