Write "good safe handling" on one corner of a piece of paper and "lots of flex" on the other corner.
Draw a line between the two and put a cross on that line where you want to end up.
This should nicely illustrate the compromises you have with front suspension.

I've got 5 link front & back, (sway bar rear) in my Surf and it handles well

jeeps have 5 link front and rear and ride well with it, but they have a large sway bar for a light weight 4wd.
if you do it on a heavy car just fab up a giant swaybar with quick disconects, i'm talking like 40mm solid, and you'll have the best of both worlds.

I have to agree with this approach.

trying to fit it in the front of a front engined four wheel drive is the problem.
so you end up putting the links where they fit and then end up trying to fix the poor handeling with sway bars and shock tunning.
there is no reason why you can't get a 5 link front to work as well as 5 link rear or 4 link rear, you just need to move the motor, headers/ dump pipe, drive shaft and put the links where they need to be

if the research is done ,and its properly set up it should drive good, its all the americans do, i know of two 80 series over there that ive read on other sites & have 3 link fronts and they still drive highway kms with them, but you'd definitly need to go 5link under aheavier 80 series.

1) Don't the 80 series have good front end flex anyway.
2) This is specific to an 80 series, so should be in the Toyota Section.

How about bolting in some Superflex arms?

Although the original poster has an 80 series he was considering putting a 5 link on, his question was:
... are they really that bad to drive on the road?show me what you got and setups
So opening the question to anyone who might have the answer or can show setups - not 80 series specific.
Here are some of a 5 link front on a Land Rover.
Note: chassis mount for lower link is under frame rail, and chassis mount for upper link is outside chassis rail. This overcomes the problem of engine, exhaust and engine mounts in the way.

.
compared to a 5link front end i'd say no they dont have good flex. 5 link puts the 80 series flex to shame.
