I bought a Toyota surf at the weekend it was a not running as is where is deal so if the motor is ok and a goer it will be a big bonus. It apparently is a 2.8 in it and being an import I think it was a 2.4 originally.
I have never had or worked on a turbo diesel before so im not sure what im doing or looking for if it was a petrol I would check air, fuel, spark but im lost on this one. I have not yet got it to fire up at all. I took the line off the fuel filter and hand pumped it not much was coming out so I put 4lt in tank and pumped again now it pumps fuel. Still no starty so I pulled the air filter off and tried aero start still no go (it may have sort of half fired once). Any help on what to check next would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Darren

So can you see that you can get fuel to the injectors (by loosening their nuts off and then cranking motor and seeing fuel spray everywhere)? If not, the fuel cut solenoid could be gone.

)

Should be a primer plunger on the fuel filter but if you have no luck you really want to check that the fuel is getting to the injectors. Pull the glow plugs out and like this it should wind over fast and when you get an even mist coming up through the holes then it all primed ready to go put the plugs in and bingo.
If you dont get the mist try holding foot flat down as you do it. Most of these rotary yota pumps open a bypass on wide open throttle so it will allow fuel through even if the fuel solonoid is stuffed and that will at least tell you whats happening.

you dont start a diesel on aerostart. Will do damage internally.
Glow plug timing relay, thats what the wires are at the passenger kick panel. It must have a glow plug pre-heating relay and timing relay for the glow plugs to work.
Might want to pull them out and check them too with a multimeter.
Cheers

yes, prime the pump, crack injectors as was said, its easier with 2 people, prime pump by hand on firewall, it will either have a black rubber button which you push down, or a plastic knob looking thing, if it has the plastic knob you have to unscrew it, then it will let you pump in and out, then turn the car over crack an injector, when fuel sprays out (with a fair amount of pressure), lock it back off, it should fire after a bit of cranking, my 2.8 started without priming, just lucky i guess, and will also fire without glowing the plugs, you can also just tow the truck up the street in gear so its turning the motor over, with the car on "on", just travelling slowly, this will prime it and should fire and run without burning your starter, wiring and battery.
Diesels are simple, If the motor has compression and fuel it will fart and cough and possibly start, so long as its not to cold ambient temp wise, if a motor has compression, heat from plugs, and fuel it will run everytime, if it doesn't your missing on of them and is not to hard to work out which one.

well people thank you very much. I bought this car not running with an assumed stuffed and blown motor.
Turns out it had run out of fuel
i undid the lines on top of the injectors and turned it over and it pumped fuel out and sort of tried to fire. Instead of trying for ages we tow started it
runs and drives unreal
turbo wistle is sweet if your into that sort of stuff
only things on the car i can find dont work are rev counter and temp gauge
Very happy
thanks again for your help cheers Daz

There is a wire connection on the injector pump it has 2 wires, that is the tacho output, and temp guage im sure you can work out but its on the thermostat housing.

most lux 2.8's will self prime if you just turn them over a few times.
awsome buy mate - have fun!
