Upgrading a 12HT CT26 turbo......

OK, has anyone done this, and what have they done/used? I believe it is possible to put a Supra impeller and housing on which is apparently larger? What about using a CT26 from a 1HDT or 1HDFTE?

I realize that a Garrett GT2860RS Bearing Turbo is probably a better unit, but with all the stuffing around making new oil and water lines, plus manifold adapter and new dump pipe, an upgraded CT26 seems a bit easier...

Gt2860 won't 'probably' be better, it'll shit all over the ct26 ;)

Hey man, Got my turbo done the other week on my 80 1hdt. Got a supra impeller which they had to machine the housing to fit and also had it high flowed. All up was about $1500. Was looking at getting a GT2860 and it was about the same price. However I didnt wanna have to modify everything to suit it. Would have ended up costing over $2000 to fit the Garrett. Runs well but I couldnt tell you how much better than stock as I never drove it with the factory turbo. Hope this helps you out a bit. MTQ in Brisbane do a good job from what I hear. Not sure if thats anywhere near you. I had mine done by Superior Turbos in Toowoomba.

I think it mostly comes down to the ball bearing core - creates boost more quickly (less delay, lag) and more easily. The rest comes down to some real high tech stuff about wheel trims, a/r's etc etc...

there are a couple of ways you can build a hybrid CT26 for a cheap upgrade.

On my 1hd-t I have used a ct26 from a Supra (7MGTE)
the centre core is the same, the front compressor wheel and housing are larger, the rear turbine is the same.

to use it on the landcruiser I have removed and fitted the std landcruiser rear turbine housing as the supra rear housing is too large meaning boost wont come on until higher in the rev range. I wanted boost at as low an RPM as possible, so used the std LC turbine housing.

the Supra front housing needs a minor mod to be able to rotate the housing to suit the landcruiser orientation, also the waste gate needs to be modified as the mounting holes are place differently on supra and LC

The same thing can be achieved by using the std Landcruiser turbo, remove the front housing and compressor wheel and swap on the Supra compressor wheeel and housing. Mod the Supra housing and wastegate as above.

Mine cost me about $300. I picked up a supra turbo on ebay and a rebuild kit from Ebay USA, I rebuilt it myself and used the landcruiser housing off my original blown turbo.

lots of turbo shops will upgrade them CT26 by fitting another brand compressor wheel, and machining out the throat of the front housing to suit, but I was quoted $12-1500 plus depending on condition of your turbo. For that sort of money, I would spend a bit more and get a Garrett to suit.
