"FUEL TANK" warning light. 80 series

G'day guys,

i've got a 80 series, 4.5 petrol that is run on gas almost 100% of the time, (there is always atleast 1/4 of a tank of petrol in the tanks, but it is never 'run' on petrol). the "FUEL TANK" warning light has lit up on my dash, i read the owners manual and it says to take it to the toyota dealer.

i read on here that it may be the transfer pump selenoid, however i'm not trying to transfer any fuel. I've also read that it may be because of water/condensation in the tank..

i put it through some pretty tough mud on the weekend, but it drove from warragul to melbourne (~100km) with no dramas at all.

Also, is this something that needs to be addressed immediately (ie before it is driven around the streets), or a job that can wait for the weekend?

Any information would be appreciated,
cheers

I had my fuel tank warning light come on in the bush one day after a stick got wedged up above the tank and pulled the plugs out. So if you have 5 mins, might be worth checking if the plugs are all good - maybe they are full of mud?

Are you talking about the fuel empty light or something else? I'm wondering if you are talking about the gauges that refer to water in the air filter box or a problem in the fuel filter area? There are sensors around these things that have indicators on the dash. I haven't seen one on my dash that says "fuel tank" so thats why I'm asking...

The light indicates a fault with the sub fuel tank system

You can short Tc and En terminals in the diag port to get a code. The codes relate mainly to the fuel level senders, the pump and solenoids. I'd say mud or something got caught in there. Hose it all out and reset the sub tank ecu by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

semi-related question

What if you have removed the subtank, how do you stop this light coming on?

mlowe76 - try the above.
