Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey all,

So I have just bought (what i think is) a 1978 BJ40 with a 3 litre diesel "B" motor. I have been checking over it with a fine toothed comb to decide on things that need to be done in what priority. So far I have a few Q's:

1. My BJ40 has a disc front end - is this standard for a '78? After doing some google research, I thought they only came with discs in BJ42's...

2. I want to remove the heater box and associated hoses that cram the cabin. I don't think it works and it's not even necessary in a soft top in QLD. If I rip this all out can I expect any issues?

3. Mine has an aftermarket air filter box and snorkel thing. The air filter is a "Donaldson Duralite P11-8160" model. Does anyone know where you can buy these? The one that's in there is filthy.

4. The steering is terrible - heaps of bump steer and no power steering sucks balls. What is the best avenue here - replace with 60 series gear (big $$$), or just add a new dampener (little $$$).

I'm sure I'll have some more questions later.

The front discs are an add on for your year. Yes you can remove the heater, just plug the lines at the motor, plenty have done it before. As for the Donaldson, any truck parts store will be able to get the required filter element when you give them the part number.

As for steering, best way is 60 series gear, but first, check all tie rod ends, the idler box and steering box for wear, buggered dampers don't help.

Steering dampers are just band aid fix.

So with regards to power steering, from what I read 60 series is the go.. How much does all the bits and pieces cost, as well as the custom fitting/fabrication?

You may need the heater box for rwc, unless you already have one.

I have pretty much removed all the heater box, I just cut through the hoses that plug into the side of the box, and fluid leaked out (coolant?). I curbed the leakage, but now wtf do I do. I might disconnect the hoses from the engine completely and plug it at the engine - sound like the best action?

if you cant find a direct screw in blank for the outlets on the engine, you can get plugs that fit in the end of the hoses which you just hose clamp on. Had them on my 40. Mind you, i replaced the head on mine, but forgot the back 6inch stub for the heater hose, and must have damaged it, cause it split 270deg coming back from roma one night, and all i had to fill it back up with was chardy and heavies. Poor thing was never quite right again. Still runs though.
