Hey can anyone give me any pros vs cons for the 4.8 wagons. I have given up looking for a 4.2 and now looking at the 4.8's. J
ust do not know much about them. Thanks.

I think the only big downer about the 4.8 is the way they drink the fuel...
As far as I know that's the only major downside. I don't know of any 'mass' issues those engines have (there'll be lemons in any model if you're unlucky enough to get one).
Aparently a reliable engine and plenty of power. Anything particular you're wondering?
So you can't find a suitable 4.2, any reason for the switch to looking for the 4.8? They're very different engines (petrol vs diesel is a whole other can of worms). Just seems more common to decide between 4.5/4.8 and 3.0/4.2.

I currently own a TD42 Gq and was looking to go to the GU 4.2 TD but they are just too expensive. For around 15K less I can get a 4.8 which would make up for the fuel use i suppose. What are the auto's like? I hear they are not too bad as you can drive them like a manual for down hill use etc. Cheers

The reason is i want a bit more power for towing. The non turbo 4.2 struggles up hills and is just too slow. From reading the reviews etc for the 3 litre TD is they are unreliable and blow up. I know this was rectified from 2003 but they still have a bad name.

or spend the 15k on building a strong/worked TD42T, you already have a good base engine in the 92 series silver top!
I also have the same 92 GQ wagon and it tows the boat like a dream with a worked motor.
