Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I'm getting some ridiculous quotes from mechanics to swap the transfer case in my Paj, and it's now looking like I can't get it done by a professional before this weekend, so I'm starting to think about biting the bullet and trying it myself after the weekend.

I still can't work out how to lower the gearbox and TC together, without damaging something. I could try to balance it on my trolley jack (if it will reach ) but I have visions of transmission tipping sideways and crashing disastrously to the ground - at least in my visions I'm not under the transmission.

From what I saw the other night it looks like the whole lot needs to move back to clear the engine etc., then down at the front and forward again to clear a chassis cross member. Does this sound right?

Anybody have any hints on how to get the combo out?

Scott, it's a bitch of a job and virtually can't be done without the car on a hoist. My advice is not to try it.
It took 3 guys to manhandle mine out when it was up on a hoist.

Yeah I did mine with two other guys helping and a big trolley jack (extends to 1 metre) the jack had a purpose built plate on it with chains to stop the gearbox falling off but it was still a real bitch. It was even harder to get back in cuz you have to get the back of it up and over the crossmember where the torsion bars join on and then try and lift the front up without the back sliding back down. I can definately see why they charge so much to do it.

Yeah I paid $350 for mine and I supplied the oil.

The mechanic who was going to do it quoted $350, then decided he can't do it. Two other places quoted $500, but can't do it before the weekend. The mechanic who changed his mind rang three others, who all turned it down - not interested.

The nearest Mitsubishi dealer quoted 10 hours @ $100 per hour!

I'm thinking Mitsubishi knows what's involved.

i did mine with a mate at a garage with a host. it took me about 6 hours in and out.

the mate helped lift it out and back in once i had the new transfer box on.

I think about $350 was what I got quoted.
I think $1K is a bit steep on Mitsu's part even though its a prick of a job.

I changed mine on the floor of my garage, removed the transfer from the box and took it off no probs. Needed a mate to help to put it back on but it wasnt tooooooooo bad all for 1 stupid detent bearing that decided to fall out.
I didnt jack it up or anything just sat under the car and manouvered it on a skateboard
