Hi all. I was wondering if anybody has put newer model diesels/turbo diesels into earlier model Hilux's?
My reason for asking, is that I was thinking about getting a late 1980's ute, and throwing a new 3lt turbo in it, or similar. All of my mates have got the later model 2.8's, and I'm not incredibly impressed with them.
Just want to know what motors are interchangeable with what model trucks. Cheers guys.

if i were you i would get a 5L then turbo it, this way you avoid all the computers and shit that is needed to run the engine like TPS, air flow etc. and you can bolt it up to a 3L gearbox and mounts still allowing you to get crawler gears and the like. A 5L crank will fit into a 3L block taking it out to 3 litre if you choose to go that way.
The 1kzte that you are talking about, comes intercooled or n intercooled. basically it is hilux v's prado. the Prado having the top mount intercooler and alittle more power. Both are the same engine and manifolds and the intercooler can be bolted on later if thats what you want.
Price wise, there are currently 1Kzte front cuts fromt he import surfs available for around $2500, and with the end of financial year around the corner alot of jap importers are trying to move shit to turn over some cash flow.
I know that the 5L will fit in no worrys but you may want to check the 1k for height as it is a tall motor.

Thanks heaps. Just what I needed to hear. Where do you reckon I'd find out about the 1KTZE fitting in? I've only just started to get into this stuff, I'm more used to Nissan engine models, and street car stuff, so the toyota engine models dont mean a whole lot to me. I just know the capacity, no. of cylinders, diesel/petrol etc. - just the basics.
