Not sure if this is the answer you are after but here goes.
If you are asking if you should go manual or auto this subject has been covered in a lot of depth. Try searching auto vs manual.
The manual gearbox on the patrol is prett dam tuff. The 4 speed auto from nissan is better than the 5speed for strength. The 4 speed auto can be built to handle a lot of power should you need it.

best off test driving each. I went with the manual simply coz it went well and as Feral said the manuals are very tough. The auto cost a bloody fortune to rebuild should they need it which most do after years of lugging nearly 2.5tonnes in overdrive. The autos were never equiped with adequate cooling so I dont doubt their strength but heat kills em. I found all the 4.5 TI's (auto) had an anoying ratio gap between 1st and 2nd. Im pretty sure the box was the same in the GQ auto and I had one in my shorty but it got a rebuild and shifted fairly harsh and left a substantial hole im my pocket. The manuals had early problems with 5th gear but they are no doubt sorted by now. My GU has nearly 180k on the clock and the manual box shifts like new and is a pleasure to drive.
