To supercharge or to increase cubes....

Hi all,

For the same money, what would be better?
Supercharging the 4.0 (bolt on) or boring out to 5.0 (tricky) ??

My rig has enough low down torque for most off road and sensible performance for on road but my heart lies in the land of Hoon.
My understanding is supercharging would give more power further up, as revs increase but place more strain on engine.
Increasing capacity would give more herbs allround, be less stressful, but way more complicated to carry out.

What about just moving up to 4.6?
Is that very tricky - new crank, same heads?

Engine is in good nick, done 100K.

Thanks,
Hardy

Super chargers give more torque low down and power up top.

I'd supercharge. If you believe the hype, superchargers do not adversely affect fuel consumption. Boring out the block to 5.0 certainly will.
And LoanRangie is right, superchargers will affect both low down and top end.

i had a 4.0L with an sta supercharger thor manifold, worked great ,could have had more bottom end .l had to change injectors as they didnot flow at top end.this was on a classic range rover, how will you manage the fuel system, have been told you can piggy back rover computer ,but auto does not change smooth with new motor.l also have a p38 lm intrested in finding out how you fitted larger tyres ,do they hit .what is the largest tyre you can fit thanks rohan
l would go 5.2 smoother power

G'day Rohan

I beleive the THOR is the '99-on manifold, so I should have the same injectors as what you did - how could they not flow enough? I thought it was the super dense air that makes the difference, and just a little more fuel.

I already have a Unichip and keen to dyno it after changes anyway.
I'm pretty keen to supercharge over boring as it's more convenient, simple and removable for next rig. Bloody exxy though.

How much did your STA cost and how was it attached/positioned?

I've heard the ZF22 (std in 4.0) doesn't like much more than 165kw.
What gb did you have in classic?
What gb does HSVRangie have?

265/75x16 fit fine, once I removed front mudflaps.
I pulled rears off too, as I chunked one and it kept folding up onto tyre and rubbing.
Put the screws back in when done.
Only mentionable drama is when one front wheel goes up all the way while turned out. But this can only happen when going real slow anyway.
Freeway mode is unchanged, no problems around town except very mild rub on some driveways while turning.
33" would fit too, but you would have to mod bumpstops for sure.
I reckon it would be better to do this on the axle rather than lower the boingy bit - especially if you're considering spacers for airsprings - use same piece of metal.
The trick is to keep tyres skinny - 265 max.

Unless you do a body lift - talk to me if keen - I wouldn't mind looking into this one day.

I put 4.1 diffs in too, makes it much more driveable.
Have a spare set for sale, email if interested.

Regards,
Hardy

I'm pretty sure they run the same ZF in BMW's and Jag's which have a much higher output than 165kw. They have some small differences in the valves and clutch packs but are essentially the same.

correct.

and the V12 jag has a seven packclutch instead of 5 and a spacer.

hi hardy,
the motor l used was out off a 2001 disco.only after supercharging it ran lean at mid to top end.the computer l use is a motec m800 .i changed the injectors to 5.7chev inj.and a riseing presure reg.all ok then.

the sta came out off another range rover .i moved it over to the 4.0 l motor.can send picture if you wish.

the auto i use is out off a hse rangie.it has been moded to fit the classic transfer and beefed up .we were able to make this auto stronger than the classic auto.i also ran the auto with motec.
