Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hello all,
We have a new kogan 12 volt 22’ tv/dvd combo tv

we would like to use it in our caravan.... but we’re having trouble getting the screen to stay on; it comes on for a few seconds and then goes off (ie just the screen, the tv stays on), it works fine in the car with the car running does the same as the caravan if we turn the car off.

We have 12volt 5amp carlighter adapter chord with a regulator set at 12v and we have a 100amp deep cell battery with a solar panel which the multimeter says is putting out 12.6 – 13.5 volts…

Any ideas on why this would be happening…we are quiet miffed, and would appreciate any help.
The tv is 6 amp but the cord/adaptor they recommend is 5amp.

...and 5 amp is the highest we can find and is all they recomend anyway..

have you spoken to Kogan about this? That should be your first call.

I suspect you are getting enough voltage drop to drop the screen out. You say the voltage regulator is set at 12v, but what is the voltage at the tv, or at the end of the plug? You might find the cable is small enough to drop it to say 11.2V for example and the tv screen won't stay on.

I have a portable hf radio that runs on 12v, but for best results it needs to run at 15.5v, even though its rated at 12v. Its a slightly different situation, but the aim is to overcome the losses in the cables.

Thanks for your reply phil...ill check the voltage at the end of the plug tomorrow...(my friend will bring his multimeter up)...we were using another adapter which was had a reading 12 volts at the end and it was still losing the screen so i bought a new cable ie 5amp, thought that may have been the problem......as they recommended 5amp.

Ps - i have sent kogan the same question and am hoping for an answer soon.

Hey Phil....im pretty sure our system is not big enough to run the tv....ie need a high amp battery....ours is a 100amp hour...long run not much power, so looks we'll be taking the inlwas generator camping if we wan to watch dvd's, until we get a bigger battery.

When i tried it this morning it worked for quiet a while...was sunny sola panel was helping it out...covered the panel with a towel and it stopped.

I am putting it down to voltage right now. The panel will likely be putting in more than 12V, probably around 15-16V at a guess. This keeps your float voltage above the threshold for the tv to operate happily. The 100a/hr battery should be heaps big enough, as long as it is charged up.

Obviously, as you draw the current from the battery, the voltage in the battery goes down, and 6a is a high load every hour. You are doing the right thing using the panel for sure. Has Kogan come back with any suggestions?

If the genset does the job, thats fine I guess. Good luck anyway.
