$900 1HDT rebuild kit
Need to rebuild my 1HDT and was wondering if this kit is any good as i don't want to fill it full of crap. Any one familiar with this kit?

I would want to know what brand the kit is.
you will still need a head gasket which will be close to $200 and a timing belt and tensioner kit $200-250
it is recommended to replace head bolts and conrod bolts also.
well for starters that kit has specific size bearings and pistons. Do you know what size you need?
first step with engine rebuilding is to find out the cause of failure. Then strip, clean, and machine if necessary. Then you start ordering parts.
depending what went wrong with your 1hdt you may be able to reuse some parts.

have you made sure its not just the manifold's rubber gaskets that are leaking?rowenb wrote:Have oil leak down passenger side of engine, must be head gasket. Been told to pull head off to fix but also have blow by from worn rings so might as well replace those and why i'm at it replace mains etc. 290 000 kms on motor.

You're talkin bout the inlet right? I was just goin by what this mechanic i know told me. His son's is the same apparently and need to pull head off to fix. I'm goin to start pulling it down soon to suss out the leak and determine wether a rebuild is in order.

they wont allow engine oil to leak. They can weep if you have excessive blow by oil going into the intakeudm wrote:Yes, the alloy intake manifold has rubber gaskets, which would be leaking with the km your engine has. I wouldnt think there are many 1hdt engines with head gasket problems.
Start simple, it could just be these rubber thingies.
I agree start simple. they are not a cheap engine to rbuild. I would give a good dose of degreaser than hit it with pressure cleaner to be able to see where the leak is coming from.
could be rocker cover gasket?
No not the rocker cover gasket, i replaced that and the leak became worse after it was sealed. That was my first thought n cleaned the engine to replace it. A drive down the road showed a fair amount of smoke comin from the exaust, whitish smoke. When i popped the bonnet i found some nice clean oil running down the side of the motor. Probably the engine flush helped alot too, never using that stuff again, done too good a job. I installed a catch can to try to get rid of some of the blow by as well.
white smoke could be injectors. Have you done a compression test?rowenb wrote:No not the rocker cover gasket, i replaced that and the leak became worse after it was sealed. did not do it myself sourced the parts from various places like diesel austarlia for gasket kit with new timing belt and glow plugs for $920
diesel engines australia for new injectors $170 had the head rebuilt with new inlet valves by engine rebuilder in wynnum as well as crack test the crank and head come to $790

More food for thought:
have you checked the oil pressure sender? It's on the passenger side of the block just above the starter. If that cracks, and they do, it will pump oil out onto the block. They usually crack on the underside of it so more oil will end up on the block then elsewhere.
Also you really should have a compression test done, It's bad to just assume something is wrong without first testing. As I said smoke could be the injectors, and while some blowby is normal, it is more prevelant on motors that do a lot of start-stop, low load sort of driving. The pressure range for what is considered good compression is quite large too, so you can have blowby, but still have a functioning motor.
