1981 rangie backlash issues

Hi all i realise this could be one of many issues but on and off the throttle my car feels and sounds like it has heaps of backlash through the drivetrain is there any common issues and estimates on cost? thank
Oh and its 2dr 4.4 motor 4spd manual with 4" lift

Standard rover option.
Goes with the oil leaks , and bad electrics , and weak axles etc etc...

that's a rather bleek view.
a mate fixed his 93 defender with new rear drive flanges and axles.
Something else to look for is a worn ball joint in the rear aframe link.

LT95 4 speeds are all shocking in the backlash department, my first Rangie I owned about 14 years ago had bad backlash (76 2 door LT95 4 speed) so I spent a few $$$ having it fixed, back to the way it was about 3 months later. Considering that I was an apprentice at the time on bugger-all money I could have saved it and spent it elsewhere
However you did bring up another symptom so check the A-frame ball joint, worth a look

Rangies have a single piece drive flange/axle assembly though, instead of the Defender arrangement. (unless of course the Rangie has Maxidrive axles...)
4 speeds also seem to be worse for backlash than an LT230...
Check that your driveshafts are done up properly, have good uni joints, and that the splines on the slip joints aren't flogged out, and thats about all you can do on a 4 speed rangie...

maybe the diff centres could be up for an overhaul,
have you checked uni's in your drive shafts?

not checked anything like that for a while but i think the rear diff has possibly been welded so not sure what impact this could have on it, but as i broke my wrist 3wks ago i havent been able to do much with the car recently, but the bandages come off wednesday so i need to have a good check over the car

Possibly look at backlash in rear diff if you think it has been pulled apart and welded as you suspect,could have not been st back up correctly.Apart from that i dont own a rangie and have only ever been passenger in a few modded ones but have noticed this feel pretty bad in them all.

I don't know about the LT95's, but for the LT230 you just get the centre diff shimmed up again and it takes the lash out.

Put some shims in the lt95 transfer inter shaft. costs about $90 bucks from MR automotive. Make sure you run the correct oil else they will be stuffed in no time. it'll be fine after that.

When I first bought my 77 about 20 years ago it had horrendous backlash.
I took it to Land and Sea at Taren Point and $2300 later it was much better.
They replaced the drop gear from the gearbox to transfer, reshimmed the intermediate gear, rebuilt the centre diff and modified it with a solid crossbar and machined the case for bronze bushes. The thrust washers in the centre diff commonly disintegrate.
They also replace dthe bell housing with a good second hand one as the clutch fork had worn the case.
I bet if you did those things it would improve yours a great deal, but of course it depends on a good diagnosis of where the slop is.
Could be rear axle ball joint, diffs, tranfer, centre diff, gearbox output shaft .
However most common is centre diff thrust washers and intermediate shaft shimming.
