G60 - worthwhile?

I have been offered a G60 for cheap (<$500). It's not going and will probably only be good for wrecking.

My question is: does anyone still drive these things? Are the diffs useful to put in anything else?

Steer clear or buy to wreck?

Cheers

i wouldn't buy it to wreck, you won't make anything on it. buy it if you want a cool, unusual project though, they are cool old trucks.

Had a G60 in the 70's. They are built like a brick S@#$House under the rusty body. Austin truck diffs and a 4L donk also from the Austin truck years. 2" diametre axles. 3 speed crashbox no synchro in 1st. Only drivetrain weakness was the clutches. I did hundreds of thousands of miles in these trucks and in their day were renound for strength.

damn tough old trucks....more so than Jeeps, Scouts and at least equal with FJ40 TLC's if not more so. Parts can be a bit hard to come by, no lockers available for standard diffs, no tranny options available anymore but you may find one with a Mark's 5 spd box. Motor has heaps of power for it's size and age...fun unique truck. Wrecker not worth much but can be a great project and if modding is your style it can be built to be as good as anything else. Cheesy had one years ago with SOA, lockers front&rear, v8 power, better gear box. It flexed huge amounts, I mean ton's!

Look for the truck cab's...they the best IMHO.

I think I made a mistake....wasn't Cheesy, was a guy going by the name Chubby from Oz. My bad....here is a pic of the G60H

Image

Also here is a heavily modded G60 UTE owned or was owned by a guy named Troy

Image

And here is a link to a webby with more details on the UTE.

The first one is Zeke's old truck. The second one is really ugly, saw a write up in a mag, didn't like it.

Like I said...mad flex. I have some other pictures of that G60H doing some flexin' but they not posted on the net and uploading is bunk when your ISP is a tin can and string....they were sent to me by a G60 guru from Oz. ;) They can be built into a serious 4x4 and to me have some style. :D

The G60H was offered on a USA site when it was sold few years back....I was temped to buy it and import but was lacking cash and a desire for a truck of it's style. Not to mention the steering wheel on the wrong side! :P I think it had been advertised for around $4k usd....

I agree the UTE is butt ugly but there is not many modified G60's shown on the net so figured I would post it.

Picture Zeke's with portals!

I went and had a look at the G60 today.

Doesn't look too bad on the outside. The bonnet and front guards have been made out of fibreglass and feel really strong.

The engine is in about 1000 pieces....was smokey apparently. Has extractors...woohoo

The interior is gutted...basically nothing except a steering wheel.

Diffs, drive shafts, gearbox and transfer case have all had the once over. The gearbox and xfer case are not in the car.

If I had the time I could possibly do something with it, but not at the moment.

i told him he'd have to pay me to take it away.

So if anyone wants a project G60 that has had a lot of work done...he'll take $400 for it. I reckon give him a while and he'll come down more.

Whats the rust situation like all round? Including chassis, springs etc?

The only dodgy bit was one of the hinges on the rear door which hadn't been fixed and the windscreen surround was non existant due to rust.
