I have a noise in my 89 GQ wagon that only happens when i engage 4wd.
I dose it when i put it in 4wd without the hubs locked and when they are locked.
It's not there if i lock the hubs and leave it in 2wd.
And it seems to be worse when its coasting.
It dose it in or out of gear and is noticable anything over about 40kph.
I just greased the tailshaft and it seems tight.

Thought i would ask for help before i pull things apart and break them more. :?

Cheers
Tom.

Sounds like you've narrowed it down to the transfer case

Can you describe the sound?

could it be the CVs ???
simple check
lock the front hubs, low range and turn sharp right
if theres a clunk clunk noise itll be the right CV
turn sharp left, if as above then its the left CV
would locking the hubs do anything if theres no power goin to the front diff (2WD )???
do u have a body lift ???

Sorry forgot to describe the sound

Sounds like a rumbleing sort of sound (NOT clicking or banging).
I figure it sounds like a dry worn bearing.
Coming from the front and very noticable.
Here's a rundown of what ive done recently in order:

2" Bodylift (no noise after bodylift) 12 months ago
3" efs sus lift (by ON TRACK) with castor bushes (5 months ago)
35" tyres (5 months ago)
Easter is the first time i have driven it fast enough to make the noise since the lift went in although i have given it a bit of a work out since the lift whent in but mostly slow flexy sort of stuff.

Is there any point pulling the tailshaft off and seeing if it still does it.?
Could rule out the transfercase....

Cheers
Tom.
