Looking for an air box for my patrol gq with a tb48 engine. Was orginally going to build one, would like to get the car going rather spend time making more bits. I tryed brisbane filters with reguards to Donaldson style filter system to fit under the bonnet. They reckon my engine would need 400cfm filter which is 12inchs in diameter, no way thats going to fit under the bonnet. The next size down is an 8inch this flows 265cfm, which would limit the abilty of the engine to rev over 4000rpm. I asked what everyone else was doing for patrols, to which iwas told there mainly fitting filters that are limiting their airflow. How true this is I don't know has anyone tryed dynoing an engine with a donaldson filter connected and unconnected to compair the results ?
Any ideas on what filter and filter box will fit under a gq bonnet and connect to a 4 inch snorkel ? That will flow the given cfm

Basically they are correct your going to need a larger airbox, there are no short cuts, you may need to move things around however if you want the motor to breath your going to need a bigger airbox i have custom ally airbox with 4" inlet/outlet that runs a v8 7.3 ford diesel filter and even thats restrictive for my turbo diesel, i need larger airbox but cbf and costs so im just dealing with it...

Donaldson airbox are your best bet...

have you had a look at the donaldson powercore range?

from memory the D09 flows around the 350cfm mark
A D10 flows, again from memory, 600 odd cfm

takes a little bit of fitting, but if thats what your after.

edit: re-read - snorkel connection - not so easy - but not impossible :D

As far as moving things around I have the passenger side under the bonnet free at the moment. I will need to fit the battery, shock tower for coilovers, airbox and maybe radiator overflow on this side. The battery could bemoved else where i.e in the back of the 4by. The shock tower will have to go where it goes. The overflow can easly be moved to the other side. So that leaves me with the shock tower and air box.
The donaldson powercore range looks very intresting, had a quick look at their website, could not find any dimensions. Makes life a bit trick will try ringing a local supplyer next week.
Unless donaldson turn up something good think I will jimmy the old tb48 filter in for the moment not the best fit, will probally get in the way of the shock tower but will let me get the engine going for the mean time.

or just get a supercheap pod filter to get it going

Could do but the throttle body is bloody close the bonnet, so a super cheap filter would rub or get knocked of every time I closed the bonnet. Could make a little adaptor to move it away from the bonnet. Will have a play with the tb48 one first.
