Hilux + Cruiser

A Q for those that might be able to forward some ideas. My bro has a 81 lux OME springs,4 inch bodylift with 35's (currently running my 37's) and in my shed i have a few diffs, g/box's, transfercase's from fj45's and a 302C and a C4 auto. Now he is wanting to put the Cruiser diffs, transfer and the 302 with C4 in the lux. Has any one thought of this or seen it done before. i would think it would be a pretty strong combo

I reckon 80UTE had a Hilux/Cruiser combo ages ago that was a weapon back then. It probably still would be if it was still around. I'm sure he'll tell you more though.

But if the job was to be done surely ratios would be on the agenda.

I did this years ago fitting 60 diffs under my hilux with a T400 auto first then a cruiser 5 speed and split type transfer. Diffs fit no drama's but the tail shaft runs close to the fuel tank on full compression of the suspension, also my front drive shaft was real short running the cruiser transfer. With an auto this would not be a problem as the auto would be heaps longer. If its an original 45 series transfer, which is a one piece housing the hilux transfer would be the stronger option. As far as ratios go on the highway the ratio's would be cool i would estimate 2400 rpm at a 100km/hr but offroad is were the car type auto's fall down as there first gear ratio is usually around the 2.5:1 and engine braking is poor on slow steep decents (4x4 auto's run first gears ratios of about 4:1 similar to a manual) but due to the torque multiplication in the convertor the hi 1st ratio is not a problem going up. In my Lux i had a Turbo 400 behind a 350 Chev with 4.1:1 diffs 36' tyres and did nothing for me on down hills that why i fitted the 5 speed manual. Ive now researched all the auto's and looking into fitting a heavyly modded cruiser auto as the ratios are better suited to offroad work.

Yeh tops, thanks heaps guys. I thought the 45 (a 78 & 79 mod) transfer would be stronger than a lux, i dont know. All i know is a few mates with 253's and 308's have had there fair share of boxes and transfers. He would put 4.8's or something in the diffs the same time i do something with my 60. Any ratio rec's on what should be used with 37's - 40's ?
