Hilix steering arm hitting U Bolts???

Hey lads, been doing some work on 95lux, (live axle) getting it ready for rego etc.

I havent drivin the car for over 18months (DUI) and last time i drove it i remember the steering was getting jammed
on my spring U bolts at flex.

NOW it seems the steering rod is getting jammed on the U bolts everytime i turn the steering wheel.

WHY would this be happening?

# the rubbers on the steering arm are flogged out
# could i have bent my J arm?
# ive done a few things to the front suspension like big shackles etc.

I was hopeing to sort this out asap as its nearly ready for rego.

I currently have the front end pulled apart (put rears up front)
so i cant get a pic but i will asap.

Thanks ppl. HTH

You may need a special u-bolt with a flat top with a concave on the edge of it, to clear the drag link. Cost bugger all too.

Agreed, but you should be running those u bolts anyway, have you put a flip kit in and its binding on that.

I would think if the j arm was to alter it would snap before it bent as its cast, and a shock absorber is going to suffer damage before the j arm, have you pulled the steering apart and not put it back on centre as in its turning in one direction more than the other causing it to bind up, are the steering stops in and adjusted correctly?

Throw it in the bin and put X-over or hi-steer in.

I had the same problem when i fitted my 2" spring lift. I fixed it by fitting a flat U bolt and buying an adjustable dropped drag link.

i dont have a U bolt flip kit in.
i havent adjusted the steering arm and it doesnt seem to steer one way more than another. Also the steering stops are set up right.

it didnt seem to hit the U bolts till i put the extended shackles in,
but i cant see why that would change it.

I think its hitting when the steering is nearly in the middle.

cheers

you probably need some castor wedges, ruf rolls the diff and makes the steering hit stuff :P

i havent put the rears in yet, so shouldnt be doing it yet.
but when i put the rears in im gonna try stop the diff from moving forward

(relocating the locating pin). Thanks heaps everyone.

why do you want ruf if you dont want to move your diff forwards?

so my shackle angle is right, dont have the time to do high steer, extended drive shaft etc that comes along with RUF.

so yeh thats the deal for now.

so you already have extended front shakles? the stock set up is a pretty good angle, but extendeds are needed for ruf.

you might need to look at drive shafts either way if you ruf as the increased travels can let them slip out. its why people run ruf for the extra flex.

but without high steer you need to limit the flex anyway.

the hanko my front leafs made my shackles sit nearly vertical,
maybe my leafs arent the same as urs.

im putting them in purely to fix my shackle angle, not expecting huge flex gains.

thanks again

the higher you lift it the sharper the angle on the drag link, standard height hilux with standard sagged springs the drag link is usually fairly level and has plenty of clearance. New flat top u bolt only $15 can help with a 2" lift but if you have higher lift you will need Z adjustable drag link.

Once I put my rears in and my shackle angle returns to normal my car should be 2inchs above standard or lower. But I think it might still be a problem. Thanks for your input, I may have to buy an adjustable drag link

hmm, must be short aftermarket springs or extended shakles. dosent matter. bear in mind with std shakles and ruf they will basically sit wit the shakles against the chassis allowing no movement.

but have a play if it doesnt work you can always swap them out.

there was a guy on here selling good priced adjustable dropped draglinks, ill see if i can find his details - they were nearly 1/2 the price i could find elsewhere.

After putting my rears up front and shaving a bit out of my U bolts steering is now missing the U bolts.

hopefully it stays this way..
