Hello all,
I have a rear diff center out of a 89' Maverick (GQ) which I want to sell. But first I need to know what ratio it is. I can't find it stamped on the center anywhere.
Can anyone help me out?
Cheers Mex

Count the number of teeth on crown and on pinion.

The 4.2 auto has the 3.9 ratio, the 4.2 manual has the 4.1 ratio and the rb30 has the 4.3 ratio.

Thats right find the numbers there is two, devide the highter by the lower and there you have your ratio.

if you still have the car its also stamped on either the build or compliance plate. it will say hg...
failing that as said just count the 2 and devide the cw by the pinion and hey presto.

not so tru sorry. i got a maverick and it has 4.1s but it does have a factory locker
how did nissan get away with all these different diff ratios and still maintain a somewhat close to accurate speedo?

Nissan sell a range of gears for the transfer case speedo drive for GQ's/Mavs.
Ive corrected a few speedos in the past that way.

nope i can assure you that my mav has 4.1s as i just pulled the diff out and counted them to make 100% sure i had got the right r+p.
and its a 4.2 petrol. but as i said it has a factory locker. which im pretty sure only came with 4.1s
and no i didnt just pull the diff out to count teeth. bent a pinion last week so rebuild in progress.

there should be some numbers stamped on the crownwheel.
ie 37:8 [4.625] 51:11 [4.636] or something like that.
BTW, my 90 petrol 5 speed Mav is a 3.9

You can't rely on that. My Mav was a TB42 manual and had a 3.9:1 diff final drive. You are probably on safer ground with Patrols (as opposed to Mavericks) but any given unit can buck the rule.

when they stamp in in the crown wheel they stamp it as say 37:9 and that's a 4.1 ratio.
Best bet is mark and count both r+p ad devise cw by pinion and that Is the ratio. Or if it's in the car look on build plate. As nothing else is really accurate.

jack the car up, rotate the wheels once, mark a spot on your drive shaft and count roughly how many times it spins, start it at 90 deg to ground, if it just passes, its 4.1 if it just misses its 3.9, its easy to do and you dont have to pull anything out

as said above, count the teeth on the crown wheel and divide that number by the amount of teeth on the pinion....
its very simple then post up your answer to tell all above what the ratio is so the guessing competition can stop

Hey all,
Im tryin to find out the same thing. It was a petrol but has been converted to a 4.2TD and is auto.
Also running 35' tyres........
Is the best way pulling them out to count them?
Needing to work it out before fitting F+R lockers
And what would be the ratio to put bak in?

Why do u need to work it out before fitting lockers? your diff ratio makes no difference on the lockers....
If you are looking to put diff gears in when you do the lockers, if you have 35s and do a decent amount of offroad work, put 4.6 diff gears in it.
