probably mismatched pulleys and/or need a shorter cam belt. even between 2 standard 1.0 litre engines, there was a big difference in cam timing parts (ie crank pulleys were 2 teeth different and 4 on the cam pulleys, and belts were different lenghs). worth a look, christover

What's the diameter of the tensioner brg?
Is it the 1.3 or the 1.6 one?

make sure cam pulley has twice the teeth of the crank pulley, 2:1 is only ratio that aint gonna destruct the motor.
I put a 2nd hand head off an old one litre motor onto mine, luckily I noticed one had 18:36 the other 20:40 ratio, so had to chang my original cam pulley onto the new head. both cam belts appeared to be same length, but I never counted them.
I have had an adjuster that was assembled wrongly, so thats worth a look into, too,

Fix #1 Get an engineer to press fit a larger diameter wheel over the top of what you have.

Fix #2 Move the adjuster (chuck the springs) down wards and relocate the bolt to one of the existing front bolts. And or, elongate the hole where the bolt goes through.

These belts are hard to tighten at the best of times. I think cam belts need to be TIGHT. I have both of the above fixes, but feel I still need more.
I only had the jockey wheel diameter increased by a couple of mm, needed more like 4 or 5mm.
