hey guys a mate of mine has a 2H on his 75 series the time has come to either rebuild the 2H or put in a newer engine 1hz? at the moment he doesnt need alot of power but in time he will be pulling a horse float he said he wants to spend maximum $6000

what you guys recommend?

Rebuild it so long as its done properly you know what you got, buy a 2nd hand for 1/3-1/2 the price and would more than likely run for years providing k's wern't ridiculous and it was serviced properly.

Comes down to how he likes to spend money....

I would personally buy a 2nd hand 1hz with the lowest amount of k's for a reasonable price, more technology etc and have some change in your pocket.

when serviced the 2h is a strong reliable motor slow but strong. Get it rebuilt properly. A properly rebuilt engine with maybe slight mods like cam is always better than a second hand engine thats of similar size / capacity in my opinion. Unless of course you but the 1hz and rebuild it instead

so if he was to go a 1hz what would be a reasonable price for a 1hz or 1hz turbo

would the conversion be as simple as engine, gearbox, transfer new engine mounts possibly gearbox mounts new radiator and exhaust?

i think from memory theres a 3h as well and a 12hdt or something like that as well. But as for price im not too sure havent read up on the diesels alot

I did the 1hz on my old 75 and was very happy went well, all i used was engine gearbox transfer and chassie mounts for the 1hz and dash.
radiator was the stock one but had to mod the sump so the diff would miss.
and i think i had to change over the transfer flange.

or you could drop in a 12ht much easyer

i would go for the 12ht engine if he can get it for 6k rebuilt i think my rebuilt turbo 2h goes hard but the 12ht's are meant to be another kettle of fish completely

yeah definitely the 12ht mate, much better engine than a 2h, i have had both, and would go a 12ht over a turbo 2h any day, i had good power and great fuel economy in my 12ht, and am going to get the motor for my 75 when i can afford it....

the direct injection makes life so much better

x3 on the 12ht if it's rebuilt for 6k, easy swap!

a second hand 1hz will cost around 3k for a decent second hand one (no exchange) and you'll spend a few dollars on a conversion radiator inlet and outlet opposite side etc and pumps on the oppsite side etc and you'll still have a second hand 1hz vs a 12ht which is more powerful and economical and if it's been rebuilt properly should last a long long time.

another option is rebuild 2h and turbo (i've had/got a couple and happy) but if you can get a rebuilt 12ht for that price go for it

12ht will slot straight in, and only has one extra wire for you to wire up, and you dont have to use the edic unit from the 2h,

it uses the same gearbox so no need for another one or the hassles of mounting another one,

they are more fuel efficient than a 2h turbo, and will handle more boost in the future, there are more oil galleries in the motor that makes it more suited to the turbo.

3 inch exhaust no muffler, will have it moving along nicely,

Who stocks good quality 2H rebuild kits? I have a sleeved 2H that needs a clean and rebuild, it still runs fine but I might as well freshen it up and get the motor 'turbo ready' before I install it into my HJ 45.
