just wondering if someone can tell me where the vin is on a 1987 model ford falcon xf

i've been told it's near the front passenger side top shock mount but i can't find it.

Yeah should be between guard and top of shock tower

YEP... LH shock tower.

it's had a new paint job and im guessing who ever painted it either bogged over it or got rid of it for some reason. is it anywhere else on the car or is that the only place it could be?

Sido number and vin number also on aluminium veh id plates pop riveted on the plenum chamber.

vin no is on the left side shock tower between guard and shock....

Compliance plate will have the vin on it as well and these are also on the left side of the engine bay in the gutter running beside the left guard. There should be two plates on the inner left guard in the rain gutter next to the guard.

best bet would be to find another xf to see vin location and then attacking yours with sand paper to expose it again as no vin could = stolen and hassles if pulled over.
