i am not able to drive the big diesel as much as i would like too, maybe every 3 weeks? my prob is the batteries only seem to be at 12.1v is this normal? 1 is a super charge allrounder and the other is a 105ah amptech. both are governed by a 150amp projector isolator. i have other batteries in the shed that get even less charge and seem to hold there charge better??

It could be a few things, the batteries could be worn out and just not holding charge for the length of time they should. All batteries will lose charge over time, some more than others, but going to 12.1v from fully charged in just a few weeks indicates there could be a problem. There could also be something running that is discharing the batteries slowly but surely over that period of time.

My GU is not my daily thanks to my work vehicle. It sits in the garage with a c-tek charger on each battery to keep them fully maintained. Might be a worthwhile investment.

Best to get your rig along to a battery world or something and have them tested to eliminate them.

Hope this helps.

gudday

if the batts are ok its pretty easy to test with a multimeter if you have abnormal current drain.

but if you don't have one shut every thing down how you would leave the vehicle stored then take a lead off the batt and replace it.........if it sparks you have a volt drop and therefore will have a current drain.

batts charge at about 14.6V and should stay around 12-13v when in good shape. 12V is not too bad - its how quick it takes them to get there that's the concern.
Most probs usually point at the alternator check that 1st.

good luck

Checked alt with multi-mrter and it indicated 14v at iddle. might have to get a charger. When i charge the batteries should i disconect them from each other and charge them separate?

Yeah, best to charge separately to get full charge to starting battery, I just disconnect the positive going to the dual battery controller from the starter. Once the car is running (and everything hooked back up of course) the alternate power will go across the surface to the 2nd battery keeping everything topped up.

Fork out enough for these suckers, it's good to look after them :)

the alt will still show 14v charging with a crook diode.

when you stop the engine then that diode will allow current back through it and will drain the batts.

if you suspect the drain is abnormal still get the alt checked if thats the only test you have done.
x2 charge separately...

good luck

have u done a voltage check on the battery ???
charge the battery up fully,(disconnect everything of it)
put a voltmeter on the battery and watch the readout
IF the readout numbers drop ,even a little
its not holding charge
and the battery is on its way out
even the best alternator will be working hard to keep a charge up to it

Try throwing in some battery conditioner. I got some from super cheap quite a few years ago so I'm not sure if they still sell it but it worked for mine.

Inox make a battery conditioner, sold at Jaycar.
