Heavy Duty Replacement Clutch

Is anyone able to suggest a suitable heavy duty replacement clutch for a GQ Patrol TD42?? Have used a Daikin "Heavy Duty" one previously and it only lasted 20,000kms. Is for a competition truck that gets a fair ole hiding!
Advice we've had so far says a custom ceramic jobbie should work, but no-one knows how much clamping force is required. Probably looking at three times the standard clamping force....but what is the standard?? Any ideas on where to start??
Have done a search of the archives, but found nothing useful, so any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Safari Daiken about the best normally priced unit.
20,000ks is good for a comp vehicle.
Costs money to compete.

Thanks for the info Bazzle, will try to get hold of one.
I probably should have quantitfied the mileage we got from the previous clutch......was about 15,000km on-road and 5,000km off-road. Is (or was) a daily driver and has only done 3 comps so far. Is about 10 months old.
And yeah....it costs $$ to compete. Finding that one out the hard way!!
Cheers

I have a gq with a turbo diesel. From what I have read about the truck before I purchaced it I think mine has a heavy duty pressure plate from a Ti EFI patrol and a motorsport clutch with about 3 X the clamping pressure of original.
When I got the truck it was working fine and it has been in there for a long time.
I recently took it up the beach in some real soft sand (without letting tires down
) and I think I bloody cooked it!!! It stunk real bad by the time i got off the beach and still has a bit of smell about it now.
I am not sure what this is from but have a fair idea it means new clutch!
I am sure that this one is pretty old but so I would say it has worked well.
Cheers

Thanks Brian. There is a bloke by the name of Gareth Bosley who has that exact set-up in his tray-back ute. Seems to cope with 155kw or so that it puts out.

That is the guy who originally had this truck! Then another bloke bought it off him and now I have it!
It is slightly different now to look at though.
Back on clutches for a minute. I know the gq has a hydraulic set up on it but is there any way to know for sure wether ya clutch is on the way out before it gets to the point that it is slipping constantly???
Reason I ask is that...
When I release the clutch pedal (engage clutch?) it seems to take a fair bit of travel to engage. (ie the pedal seems to come back up a long way) But if I am driving in gear and just slightly put pressure on the pedal it will loose traction and slip!???? seems strange
I am just a little concerned with the constant smell after it got a big flogging the other day. As soon as you slip the clutch a little bit the smell comes on very strong.
Any ideas???
Cheers

Hell, it really is a small world then huh! Do you know if he had done any fuel pump mods to it?? Like an aneroid, or replacing the pump head with one from a Landcruiser??
I know sweet FA about clutches, but if you've adjusted it all you can, and maybe bled the sytem to see if it makes any difference....then try sitting with the handbrake on, put it in 5th and let the clutch out. If it doesn't stall out, then its poked!
Someone else may be able to offer some proper advice though
Cheers

The clutch is self adjusting,no external adjustments except for pedal clearance.
By design,as the clutch wears the pedal gets higher, the clutch plate wears thinner and the fingers on the pressure plate get higher pushing back the release bearing .
My experiance on GQs,if she slips bad once ,she is cooked.Be sure to machine the flywheel when you renew it.

We installed a Daiken "Safari Tuff" one last night, so we'll see how long this one lasts.
As a matter of interest, the fly-wheel was cracked (too much heat??), the old clutch disk was totally knackered and was worn right to the rivets, and pressure plate was buggered also. Bearing was fine though.....

Hey Bazzle,
Fortunately we were able to pinch the one off the engine we are building up as a race engine for the new truck. Will just have to "acquire" a new one for the race engine when we need to!!!

Did you know that Daiken will also modify their on safari tuff clutch to have more clamp for around $90 extra......But you have to ask they don't just offer that shit!

Hey Dave,
I wasn't aware of that, but thanks for the info. We now know for next time! Its not such an issue anyway. Will be selling the truck shortly and starting again from scratch. From everything we've learnt, we're hoping to get things right the first time
.

No probs - hey I am currently installing a turbo on my rig and found this out for the increase in herbs but am going to blow the stocko first!!! Don't forget to have the flywheel machined.
If you were going a ceramic puk style clutch you would have had to have the flywheel heat treated.....old rotoray owner....

Yeah, we figure a ceramic one will go in the new comp truck. Have a mate with a worked Chev 383 in his GQ and he had to use an exotic ceramic jobbie. Cost about $2000 a pop! Its producing about 240kw ATW though.....don't think we'll have that same problem with 120kw from ours
.
What turbo kit did you go for??

I only just ordered it - a Swartzer (check spelling) complete with a Diesel high mount turbo manifold and a 3" dump pipe but got touched $2800 the guy who referred me only paid $2600 a month or so ago - apparently the materials went up (but sick of all da bullshit so I still ordered)... Hope to be getting 300+ hp ATW complete with a front mount the size of my radiator to keep the psi coming thick and fast!!!
stock motor lol for low compression only done 250K

Schwietzer I think it is. If you want lotsa HP, you've got to play with the fuel pump also. Best mod to do once its turboed is fit a Landcruiser 1HD-T head to the fuel pump. Delivers about 20-25% more fuel within the same time frame because of the bigger element. With more fuel requires more air, so upgrade compressor wheel on the turbo to something a little bigger too. But not so big you get too much lag. Then go propane injection
!!!
Another mate was running his at 22-24psi before he went to propane. Has dropped to 16psi now that its gassed for the same performance. That truck is 322HP ATW and happily scares small children, animals and V8 owners! Looking to intercool it soon too.

I am in melbourne .. reckon the clutch is on it's last legs .. But really just need a "replacement" clutch like a daiken etc.
The patrol is pretty stock, reliable daily driver\tourer setup ( had a modded Zuk and now doing up a hilux from the hardcore stuff).

I tell everyone and i will say it again. Direct Clutch in brisbane.
Quite a fair amount of outback challenge, winch challenge trucks use direct clutch clutches. AS well as being on the top 4 summernats horsepower heroes cars.
They are making my clutch as I type right now and it shoudl be awesome once done.

Got my truck booked in there for a check out and replacement of parts as needed this week. (tommorrow actually!)
I think it was Steve I spoke to.
Seemed good so I will see how it goes.
Got quoted I think about 1100 or something similar for worse case scenario eg clutch, pressure plate, flywheel machine, throw out bearing r & r of box etc.
I hope their stuff holds up but from all accounts they are the ones to talk to.

Well I just yesterday got my truck back from direct clutch in albion.
Totally different truck to drive!!!!!!!!!! Clutch has nowhere near the travel that it used to before it would disengage.
Steve showed me my old clutch and it was worn down to pretty well the rivets and all the springs where heaps loose.
Going thru the gears seems a lot nicer and I could swear that it seems to have more go.....???? Could have been slipping before a bit. Seems to have knocked a few noises on the head also.
So a new clutch, flywheel machine, throw out bearing etc later and I am all set to go.
Really good fella and seemed to know their shiat without any bullshit sales crap too.
Cheers

Well, at least someone is having some good fortune. The Daiken "Safari Tuff" one we installed a few weeks ago isn't handling the job too well. Is heaps better than the previous one, but still not great.
Hopefully have a buyer for the truck soon, then its not our problem!
Cheers
