deep water causeing altinator problem on my gen 1 pajero

hey im new to the site but ive been browsing the site for a while now.. anyway im having an issue with my altinator on my gen 1 pajero, everytime i go through deep water it instantly kills the altinator ive gone through the 3rd one on the weekend, what can i do? do they make a waterproof altinator? ive heard of modifying a 350 chev altinator to it will correct the prob because some how it is more resistant to water and mud, i dont personally believe it but i would like some feed back on what i can do. thanks

shit the alternator is mounted higher than the air in take on the Gen1's , how fast you going through the water?

What motor is it on?

My 2.6 the alternator sits right down low on the left hand side of the block.

You wont/cant get a altenator to be completly water proof you can only prevent water and mud and sh!t from getting to it.

I just fabed up a bit of scrap checker plate i had left over from another job to sit neatly around it worked a treat. You can pretty well use anything as long as its fairly heat resistant.

There was another thread a while back about this same problem might be worth a search you might get lucky.

yea ive talked to a few auto lekies, and found out about a brushless altinator or an oil cooled altinator, both are more resistant to water and mud, but its a 2.6 and its in the bottom left corner or the motor, the vehicle does have a little bit of a lift but, the depth of water that i go through the motor is submerged, normally water doesnt effect the altinator its the dirt and mud that gets in, now im poor as shit, and i have a parts magna in the back yard and pinched the altinator off it cause i cant afford another new one and managed to fit it on, it has an external reg and apparently more resistant to mud and water so ill give it a go on the weekend and see if it shits itself, then ill just save up for a brushless one i think,

I have this problem too with my 2.5TD MK1 Pajero "gen 1" .....had 1 time when i go into the water the 3 light appear on the dash and after the drive it emit a really loud noise and turn out the lubricant of the Alternator bearing was washed out....luckily some WD40 serve it run again....

Now when i go to a water that could reach the Alternator....im pretty worried that i will send the Alternator to heaven....

Jonezy01 ,can u take a picture to show us the setup u had to protect the water from the Alternator?

iv heard in the past off people making a breather and water tight cover for the dizzy... any one heard of this? or got pics?

di electric grease to seal up your alt and plug leads works awesome .. put it on all your electrical connections where you are relying on an interference fit .. light bulbs etc .. will keep the water (and the corrosion that ensues )

Just put a bead of silicon around the cap (To seal it) then just get some clear pvc hose for the breather and run it up to ya fire wall with a in line fuel filter on the end. Pvc hose can be picked up from car bitz / Repco ect... for about $ 1 a meter, and the fuel filter shouldent be any more than about $3ea

If the Alternator had been sealed tighly....don't the Alternator will have cooling problem as the Vent is design for cooling :?
