tried searching it, couldnt find any direct answers. all ive heard is the factory 4.2's one is restricting.... does the zd30 one sound any different? does it need to be modified to fit the 4.2's airbox? and what should i expect to pay for one? cheers

If you look down the lid of a td42 (opposite direction to air flow) you will see it squashes down where as the 3L lid is fairly consistent. Much bigger.
I havent done it, but there is a small modification needed to make it fit as there is a MAF senser on the end of the zd lid which makes it a square flange. Shouldnt be hard to knock something up.
No idea on cost, and I wouldnt think it would sound any different.

they flow better...
just took to the lid with a grider and ground down the square where the MAF senser was to make it around again.
they are hard to come buy... not sure on price

It shouldn't be that much. I got a brand new one from Nissan for about $160.

I've bought one from the wreckers aswell, back when I did the turbo conversion. Cost me $150 complete. Bargain. You can't get them anymore for that price.....

X2 I would like to know also as I was told 2.8 Air Box was better suited for outlet position.
Also is there any issues or mods need to be done to use this box on TD42?

The 2.8L airbox is similar but not exactly the same as the 3.0L. I bought a 3.0L lid for my 2.8L airbox. I had to grind a tab/bracket of the 2.8L airbox so that the 3.0L lid would fit. This is not a big deal and took about 30 seconds with the grinder.
The outlet is on the lid. I cant comment about the outlet positioning between the two lids as I haven't looked. Note that the flange and bolt pattern to attach the airflow meter to the end of the outlet is different between the 2.8L and 3.0L lids. Most people I have seen that have used a 3.0L lid on a 2.8L or 4.2L airbox have cut the airflow meter flange off the end of the lid, leaving a 3 inch pipe. This can be used to clamp a silicon hose too, for custom turbo/inlet piping.
