75 series gearbox issues

got a problem with the gearbox in my 96 75 series. box has the usual chatter in 5th gear but lately it has been making a high pitched whine when you back off the gas a touch in 5th and 4th, all gears are easy to change and the noise goes away at around 110. changed the oil with 85 140 and has made it a bit quieter. was thinking maybe it's the output bearing??.
it's at it's worst when you get stuck behind slow traffic on the highway and your constantly backing off the power, there's no noise when it's under load (except the chatter in 5th)
got a cape trip coming up and just thinking if it can wait till i get back. located in mackay

How many klms are on the car/gearbox? I have seen on here quite a few people have issues with noisy 80 series 5 speeds, but it seems that changing to a specific Castrol gear oil fixes the issue.

it's got about 290 000 on the clock, i haven't done much towing but any towing i did was in 4th. don't know about it's previous history though.
have been hearing alot about the castrol gear oil making them run alot quieter. the 85 140 i have in the box and transfer now seems to have made a difference to noise and shift quality.
not towing anything to the cape so hopefully it'll cruise up there and back without drama and pull the box out and rebuild it when i get back

I am not up with the 75 series as to which box they have, is it a H55F or R15* series box?
might be worth checking the output on the transfer case (behind the 6 bolt star shaped cap) and see if there is much slop on the output shaft, or maybe the nut on the shaft has come loose, this is a common problem on the H55F, remedy is why rebuilding use a square shouldered bearing on the output, rather than the rounded shoulder one Toyota uses.

it's got the h55f in it. got a feeling it might be something in the transfer, had a play around with it, when i coast to a stop in neutral from about walking pace down it makes a clunk clunk clunk noise and when put into h4 with the hubs out it makes a horible grinding noise. thought it was the rear diff originally but pulled it out and it seems fine.

Mine used to make all kinds of weird bang/clanging wirring noises, had 320,000km on it. Was a combination of normal bearing wear and a worn main gearbox output shaft.
I just recoed a spare box and put it in.

Sounds like the rear of the main shaft where the output gear goes on is flogged out. I wouldn't do a trip up the cape with it, I have seen boxes where is has flogged out completely, which will leave you stranded.
Option 1: pull the box out and get a reco exchange one, or reco yours. (you can get good quality aftermarket parts including the main shaft, shop around before you go to Toyota, better still don't go to Toyota...
Option 2: you can buy a new output gear, which has a extra long spline on it, it is a combination of the gear and spacer between the output gear and the PTO gear. Don't just get a new standard gear, you need the extended one. pull transfer off, fit gear, put back together and off you go. Probably half a days work with the right tools, can do it yourself if you have a bit of nouse.
this is the gear you need, I would put one in either way, will help stop flogging out a new shaft.

thanks heaps for the help, the grinding noise in 4h was unrelated, the clunking noise at walking pace is there in 2h 4h and 4L but doesn't do it in reverse.
The gearbox input gear sounds like a good possibility, is this possible to change with the box still in the car? have a body lift so it's pretty easy to get to
otherwise i might try and pick up a spare box to get me up and back until i have time to rebuild my box/transfer

Yes, it is possible to do the transfer input gear with the box in the car.
you might find it is worth putting a bearing kit through the transfer case when doing the output gear, also be prepared to find something else wrong, it usually happens.....
Shame your not up here in Cairns, could give you a hand to do it....

that makes things easier then, would definately do the bearings while i'm in there.
would that explain the clunking noise? noise isn't there when you come to a stop with the car in gear and the clutch depressed, only there if you coast to a stop in neutral. clutch is pretty sad and is getting replaced in the next few weeks if that could have something to do with it.

Pull the PTO inspection plate and have a look around, and drop all the oils and see what they are like tooo.

If you are doing the clutch, get the gearbox reconditioned/checked over at the same time. will save time, dollars and a lot of hassle. If your mech is a decent bloke he will give you the gearbox and transfer so either you, or someone else can do it. Or just bite the bullet and get a reco box and put that back in. should be able to get one for around 1800-2k exchange

doing the clutch myself, cost a small fortune to get it done here. would love to slap a reco unit in but the best quote i've got so far is 2800 exchange.
Is it possible to inspect the input gear and spline through the pto cover on the transfer case? seems like a fairly common problem with the cruiser boxes, one of many anyway. want to get it right now as i want to rebuild the box myself

Yes, check out the output gear via the PTO cover. as for rebuilding the box yourself, it is possible but there are a few bearings in that are dead set pricks to get off/out without specialist tools. (especially in older boxes with lots of k's on them like yours). I got my base box put together and it cost me around 500 I think, but i supplied parts. New main shaft is around 350, syncro rings you need to get via Toyota I think are about 40 each. Use quality bearings Koyo are factory Toyota and good as far as I am concerned. check for wear on shift forks and rings, dont pull the top cover apart if you don't have too, it is very finicky to get back together.
DO NOT use second hand gears from another box unless you are prepared to have a gearbox that howls.
Get a good workshop manual and read it for a few days before hand.
If you do all the work yourself you should be able to get it done for around 1500 - 1800 all up, get a few quotes for the basic box rebuild.

yeah that would be my preference to supply parts and get the box done in the shop, do the rest myself and save on labour, have access to specialty tools and a hoist. need to use the car for work so hopefully it doesn't develop too quickly, got a 400km round trip. will pull the pto cover off and have a look in there next week.

Have a look on evilbay, I got a h55f gearbox and transfer rebuild kit with koyo? bearings and new lay? shaft etc for around $550 delivered. Luckily a Toyota trained mate did the job so it only cost me around $600 including oil.
