Removing intake resonator

G'day has anybody removed the intake resonator from the air filter of a 3.2l diesel Navara, or any other smallish diesel motor for that matter. Any difference in performance without it?
I will be installing a snorkel soon (maybe a custom??) and it would be sweet if i could do away with the resonator box and hook straight to the main air filter box.

I haven't done it on a small diesal, but on the Toyo 3Lt V6 it makes a noticeable difference to throttle response. Doesn't really give you heaps of grunt or anything but a worthwhile mod in my view.

They weren't put there by accident, and they wouldn't be there if they didn't do something.

If it works, don't fix it.

AFAIK resonators are put on to quieten down the intake noise at particular frequencies/RPM level, so is purely for cosmetic/aesthetic reasons. I have 2 on my suzuki and removed the bigger one when I installed snorkel. Other then a bit more intake noise I've not noted any real difference.

I asked the same question myself and was lucky enough to be able to direct it to a engineer who did some of the manifold/intake design on a couple of vehicles.

He indicated that these resonators ( Hemholz ? ) were indeed to damp specific resonances but somewhat to my surprise these often showed up as external noise and could effect driveby noise measurements - and therefore had to be damped.

I'm sure that the resonances would probably be heard internally as well but it didn't seem to be his major concern.

As for power / torque etc - no effect.

thanks for the replies. If it is only for the redustion of noise i think i will get rid of it when i install a snorkel. One less join to worry about leaking i reckon and a more direct path for air flow.
