Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The speedo has stopped working, it has a clicking noise from behind the dash. I replaced the right angle drive 6 months ago & it is working fine. I have tested everything from the transfer case to the drive which goes into the dash pod. I removed the angle drive & drove around the block & everything was turning. What is inside the dash speedo display? Does anyone have a spare from a 1985 R/R. Even if I could borrow one so that I could have mine looked at.

my speedo also does exactly this, with the speedo out of the housing i can drive around town and it reads fine, but as soon as i put it back in the housing it starts to play up again. I haven't had time to try to investergate why it does it. I will be really interested if anyone else has had a similar problem and what they did to repair it.

Ive got no answers for you either but mine also does this. I replaced the cable today but still the same. Someone must know what the problem is and the solution to repair it.

I have had this hapen and repaired it before but it was a long time ago. I think there is a gear inside held on by an extremely small circlip, that can fall off. Just pull it apart and take a look. If you can't fix it take it to Lionel Otto Speedometers - (Evans rd I think) Salisbury, Brisbane. They do speedo repairs and recalibrating.

Memory is returning a bit. The circlip and gear falling off will mean the speedometer doesn't work but the odometer does. There is something else that can happen that will do the opposite. If neither are working either the drive is slipping in it's socket or maybe both parts of the speedo have failed at the same time. It is all pretty easy to see once you take it apart.

This makes sence because my Odometer is still working.

Your speedo is probably newer than mine, but to get it apart I had to fold back some small metal tabs that were folded over, near the front face (sort of like removing a door skin from a door). I refitted the gear and the circlip and put some glue on the end so it didn't come off again. That was a few years ago now (hence the fuzzy memory) and still working well.

The best way to cure this problem is to cheat!!!
Go to a Bike shop & get a push bike speedo, you can set tyre diameter up to 31 or 33 inches if you buy an expensive one,only goes up to 120kmh
but thats enough.
Fit to RHF wheel & run wires along brake hose into cabin[will need to extend wires] mount on dash & Bob's your uncle!!
Extreemly accurate & a good lazy fix.

Tried fixing it today and couldnt find anything like Ben discribed. Pulled it apart and couldnt realy find a defianate problem but modified what i though was the problem. now it sort of works but i doubt its acurate and for some reason the odometer doesnt work now. I give up. I will just find another dash then take it top Able Instruments at Loganholme and get them to service it and re-set the odometer to match what mine allready is.

Why buy another speedo to get it serviced and reset.

Why don't you just take your stuffed one to them and get them to fix it.
It's gotta be cheaper!

The spindle of early models run in a sintered bronze bush. In my old rangie the spindle siezed in the bush - pulled it apart and impregnated the bush with wd40, which did the trick.

Because i had to superglue some parts back together. They dont come apart to easy

Sorry RUFF, they must have changed the design. You could try some nailpolish remover on the superglue...
