any ideas...im stuck???

Ok the problem is.. when braking the lux pulls to the right.
Ive done wots listed below thinking this would fix but it hasnt -

replaced pads(there was a crack in the left side)
put a kit threw the calipers with all new pistons(4 Pistions would not come out and were damged when gettin them out...frozen rite up)

i now have good brakes but it still is pullling right.

ive checked my hubs are not too tight and not too loose.
i had the discs machind just b4 xmas so im sure they arnt out shape.

all that i can think of left is the steering.... I have ALOT of play in the steering...its currently running a dropped draglink on the standard pitman arm etc....but there is heaps of play.... is it time to go p/s and x over or hi steer?

also the hangers are guan be dropped and redone and new longer leafs will be put in should this be done b4 or after the p/s?

or is there anythin else that can cause this pullin right(as the steering mite not fix it but it defintly needs to be fixed anyways)

when i was running a dropped link i mine I had a similar problem, i think it was pulling left though. If you draw a line point-point on the draglink and compare it with that of the toque rod you will probably notice quite a difference, far as i know these should be roughly parallel. I changed the torquerod mount and torque rod on mine and it made a bit of difference.

Also you could try tightening the draglink pivots right up and then back off a touch, this also fixed a bit of my probs.

torque rod bushes will be rooted or it will have ripped of the chassis at the top end.

narh wheel alignment is pritty good.... it stays straight with no effort at all...its under brakes that it pulls.
the steering wheel turns to the left till it grabs and i correct it as it dives right. basiclly if im at 100ks i end up in the next lane or two over on a heavy brake.
at 50 it dosnt dive to much as i can hold it there better.

im gussin the play in the steering is alowing the steerign to twist under braking.????

check your steering box is secure and your frame isnt cracked around the mounting.

also check the u-bolts are tight.

the only crack is the the front right hanger....its almost let go....that y it guna get the dropped hangers soon.
is that the mount u mean ?

Possibly a bent diff. Had simliar troubles in my 80 and had to put an offset kingpin in???

yup we did do the bleed the brakes correctly...its really only started after i did the front seals in the axles and cv's with new grease etc... coudl the shims be wrong? ive checked the bearings with calipers off and the right is perfect and the left is a tiny bit loose but i will tighten that up a touch soon.....the problem started b4 i touched the brakes...so i have rebuilt the whoel front brakes and now i have better brakes just hasnt fixed the divin right problem... myabe its a combnation of the loose steering..crack on the hanger... left bearing slight losse.

im just stuck for wot else it could be!
maybe its time to give it to a expert :)

Hi Macca

Have you checked to see if the handbrake cable is releasing properly on both sides. I had similar prob in my 81 hilux one sside was binding which meant the shoes were partly engaged all the time so when brakes were applied that side grabbed first. also check condition of rear shoes.

the handbrake dosnt work... the adjuster and springs are all frozen togther... thats another job for another day.

the brake line isn't kinked somewhere along the line, or one of the lines blocked with chit. Might be worth working the lines over????

yeah thougth that....but when bleeding the fluid is comin out pritty good...ive pritty much ruled the brakes out...just carnt seem to work out wot it could b!

Haydo,

My lux used to do exactly what you are saying.
Under hard brakes you would have to counter steer
to keep the thing straight in the lane.

I had a intact torque rod and everything, but all the joints om
the tie-rod and drag link were worn as.
Then I went to crossover which solved the problem immediately.
I also upgraded shockies at the same time which obviously helped too.
How old are your shockies?? Maybe replace those too.
At least that will help stop the truck from diving under brakes.

shocks are brand new rancho 5's just b4 xmas

yeah i have heaps of play in tha steering all the joints are farked!!!

i was hopeing steering wasnt the problem $$$$ so im guissin its x/over and p/s time very soon...:)
but thast bout all i can think off.

Tyre pressures ok ?

I know it would be noticeable under normal driving conditions but incorrect pressures could exacerbate the problem under heavy braking.

Plus its not a big $$$ fix ;)

yeah dan ive been checikn them every few days and they are right on 34psi in front
28rear

pritty sure its the stering..got a quote aprox $1200 for p/s with x/over
all new and fiited... will look into other options first but im probly just guan do that and hope its the problem.

replace top and bottem swivel hub bearings and use the new shims while front right and left r of the ground make sure steering fromm lock 2 lock is smooth and not to tight

yeah i rekon steerring is the main problem ... bearings are all good...its all brand new.

its guan get the steering dun very soon and hangers dropped and re done not long after so it will be sweet as after all that :)

i had a simillar problem and it was a combination of the drag link being stuffed and there was not enough castor on the front i put a droplink in and some castor wedges and it heaps better now

Are all the brake caliper pistons moving freely?

Could be one of the bores were damaged or even a blocked line into the bore

all the bushs are less than 6mnths old... all look in good nic.
yes all pistons are good and brand new and no they arnt blocked...i rebuilt them myslelf....im 100%sure my brakes are good...the only thing is maybe a bleedin of the portion value.

who knows....its guan go p/s and x/o very soon. is it okay to do this b4 dropping the hangers?
