I cant believe I sold my hilux last thursday... then today my house mate said I think I want a hilux...

I could have strangled him as mine was really good nic and well maintained.

anyway we looked at one today which was in average nic but nothing too urgent except for it was leaking a fair bit from the rear main seal. 2.8 diesel. ln106

IM assuming this is a gear box out kind of job and that the seal is cheapish but the work to do it is significant.

im well versed in luxs but not this job.

How hard is it, whats it cost.

Has anyone had it done at a mechanics? if so what did it cost.

after some fairly quick advice as he is looking to buy before this weekend...

hardest thing is getting the gearbox in and out.
i did it with my 2.4 hilux. its just a case of remove to old seal check for any marks on the housing tap the new one in. put flywheel clutch and gearbox back on.
the seal wont cost you anymore then $20.
hope this helps

Piece of piss, between you and a mate and a trolley jack. Do the clutch while its out.

Mechanic will take you from behind.

if you do a seal, use a genuine toyota seal, there about $70..money well spent..

after market cheap seals are crap and will leak in a very short time.

Most mechanics will come in with a quote of around $450 drive in drive out.
I think they allow around 5hrs labour in the book.
My 2.8 they did the seal and a new fork pivot for the $450
