particularly after a rear main because the last one i put in was a POS and started leaking the next day (note it was all rubber but wouldve had a spring in it)...

not really fond of donating the $80 odd bucks to the japanese either

Are there any good aftermarket rear mains out there? with a metal outer surface?

geez for all the sh*t you have to go thru to replace a rear main, why wouldn't you use a genuine one that has less chance of leaking? Unless you just love pulling gearboxes out.

If you're still not convinced, ring a mechanic and get a quote for the job. Even using a genuine seal, you're still miles in front dollars-wise by doing it yourself.

The other thing is is the crank ok? Doesn't need a sleeve?

Definitely use a genuine seal.

Since when do they cost $80??

x2 on checking the crank.

x3 on the crank. you can sit the seal out a bit if it's worn.
